Degree: Human Resources Management

Year of graduation: 2014

Once in a Lifetime Experience

Stacy Palmer had what she calls a “once in a lifetime experience” at Sheridan. The 2014 graduate of the Post Graduate Human Resources program was one of more than 2000 students that Sheridan’s co-op department supports annually. The co-op experience is not just about education, it’s about opportunity. “I was impressed with the prospect of co-op within my program and the possibility of bridging into a diversified workforce,” says Stacy.

An international student from Jamaica, Stacy encountered some challenges during her studies, but overcame them by taking advantage of the resources that Sheridan has to offer. “I sought positive peer groups and social clubs on campus for networking and learning. Fortunately, I was awarded an on-campus job as STAR (Student Admissions Representative) which afforded me exposure through campus literature and countless campus tours and events.”

After completing her co-op work term, Stacy was hired as a permanent full time employee by her co-op employer, Bevertec CST INC. “This was super exciting. The announcement was made during the company’s 2014 International Customer Conference which I managed and organized,” says Stacy who was also recognized for her “heroic global” contribution to the company in less than three months.

Bevertec offers recruiting and consulting services to external agencies on a national and international scale. The company will be hiring additional co-op placement students from Sheridan for the next work term. Stacy will be working with these students within her full time role.

Stacy offers the following tips for success to new graduates: “Remain open-minded to change and be willing to go the extra mile for solutions. Arrive early to work, take lots of notes and use them. Socialize as much as possible with colleagues to learn about company culture and values, and apply this knowledge through daily work.

Current students should relax and enjoy their studies, adds Stacy. “Keep positive; focus on the journey and exemplary results. As with anything else in life, challenges will come, but put your best foot forward and seek help ONLY after you have tried.”
