V.J. Patel

Vinodchandra J. Patel

In celebration of his 100th birthday, the family of Mr. V.J. Patel is pleased to announce the creation of a new fund that will support students studying at Sheridan College.

V.J. was born in the village of Nar, Gujarat in India in 1919 and raised by his grandmother. Through sheer determination and with the help of some well-wishers, V.J. was able to overcome a childhood of poverty, hardship and family tragedy, going on to finish school and graduate from Baroda University.

V.J. began his teaching career in Nar, and at the young age of 26, was offered a Principal’s position in Kisumu, Kenya. He went on to serve in various senior capacities in schools across Kisumu and Mombasa. Since retirement, V.J. has been living in Mississauga, Ont. He has selflessly given back to his community, volunteering for organizations such India Rainbow, Peel Literacy Guild and the Gujarati Seniors of Mississauga, as well as acting as a Police Community Liaison, Friends of the Library and Court Interpreter.

V.J. has always had a passion for education. He has personally experienced the benefits that can come when you offer a helping hand to someone living in poor conditions. To recognise this impact, V.J.’s son, Kirit Patel, and his family, wish to set up a fund dedicated to educating a student. Sheridan College has been chosen as the recipient of this fund, as its location in the Mississauga City Centre is representative of the community V.J. has supported and regularly visits.

Thank you for your support.
