Sheridan Creativity in the Spotlight at the Emerge Media Awards

April 26, 2017

At the third-annual Emerge Media Awards (EMA) on April 24 in Toronto, students from Sheridan’s Journalism and Public Relations – Corporate Communications (PRCC) programs were honoured with two awards. The national event, organized by the University of Guelph-Humber, celebrates student excellence in writing, design, audio/visual and communications.

The revamped news portal of Sheridan’s student newspaper The Sheridan Sun won first prize in the Design: Online News Site or Magazine category. “This award belongs to the entire Journalism program: the students that contribute to the site in every format and the faculty and support staff that make it happen,” said Cheryl Vallender, Journalism program co-ordinator and professor.

In the Public Relations category, student Cianna Wilkinson took home second place for her Canada 150-themed infographic. “This is the public relations program’s second EMA win,” said Nathan Mallet, PRCC co-ordinator and professor. “The recognition is a tribute to the emphasis the program places on creative storytelling in communications.” PRCC student Myles Herod was also a finalist in this category.

“The students and faculty responsible for this tremendous work truly make us all proud,” said Maija Saari, Associate Dean of Film, TV and Journalism in Sheridan’s Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. Sheridan’s entries were up against those from Seneca College, the University of Guelph-Humber, McMaster University, Ryerson University and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
