Pride flags at Davis Campus and Trafalgar Campus

Celebrating PRIDE

June 08, 2020

While our buildings remain closed, Sheridan began a month-long effort to celebrate PRIDE by raising physical pride flags at our Brampton and Oakville campuses and displaying a digital flag at our Mississauga campus, which lacks outdoor flag poles.

The planned events recognize that some members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community may be experiencing feelings of isolation, loneliness and a loss of community due to the pandemic, and that it may be difficult for others to be openly proud at this time, away from campus and other safe spaces.  Sheridan also recognizes that members of our community are shaped by overlapping identities and experiences that contribute to the complexity of prejudices they face.

The efforts to commemorate Pride month are a small but important step to show our solidarity, build acceptance, amplify marginalized voices and foster equity, inclusion, dignity and belonging for all members of our community.

Planned events include “Love and PRIDE in the time of COVID-19” on June 10 -- a webinar in which both students and employee members of Sheridan’s Building Positive Space Committee will share their personal and professional insight and experiences.

Other activities include the Netflix Party: Queer Eye on June 11, a live drag makeup tutorial on June 18 and a virtual baking class on June 25.

Sheridan has also assembled and shared a range of digital resources include a guide to diverse terminology, a guide on the history and development of pride and gender flags, quilt and triangles and two spirit identity, lists of resources available through the Sheridan Library on gender and sexuality and more.
