Information for Parents/Guardians

For most students, the experience of living in the residence will be the first time they will be on their own, and the staff at the residence is here to help with that development into adulthood, and provide as much support and assistance as possible to each of our students. Here is some important information for parents/guardians as your son/daughter goes to residence.

Residence Community Living Standards and the Student Residence Agreement - As a parent/guardian you will want to ensure you go over the acceptance package including the handbook and the Student Residence Agreement with your son/daughter; these are available on our website. Reviewing these documents will ensure that you and your son/daughter are fully aware and understand the important things to know about living in residence. This includes, but is not limited to the payment schedules and deadlines, any rules and regulations of the residence, move-in and move-out dates, holiday breaks, etc.

Security - At the residence security is one of our top priorities. The residence desks are staffed 24/7 and the campus is monitored by Campus Security 24/7. All entrances to the residence are controlled by card access, and the buildings are equipped with cameras. In addition to this Sheridan College offers a Safe Walk program for students on campus, and all visitors of the residence are signed in at the front desk – even parents/guardians! We always welcome a visit from you and hope you get a chance to drop in.

Resident Advisors - The Resident Advisors (RAs) are a team of fellow students who have been hired to act as a resource and guide for your son/daughter. Our RAs go through an extensive training program that is aimed at giving them the necessary skills to deal with most situations that may arise in residence.

Roommates - You may hear a lot about your resident’s roommate(s) and it is not uncommon for students to go through an adjustment period when learning to live with someone new. We ask that if your resident is having difficulty with their roommate(s) that you direct them to their Resident Advisors. This is an important first step in learning how to communicate and develop a good relationship with their roommate(s).

It is also important to keep in mind that in order to ensure the best possible roommate match, it is encouraged that students complete the application independently and answer questions included in the personality profile as honest and objectively as possible.

Homesickness - Living away from home for the first time may be a big adjustment for some students. Homesickness is normal and to be expected, and often students require someone to listen to their concern as they go through this process. Encourage your resident to get involved on campus to make them feel at home. Sending your resident a card or letter is a special little something that can make all the difference when they are dealing with the stress of academics and independence.

Privacy - When your resident starts at Sheridan they will be extremely busy over the first few weeks. Social activities, academics, and settling into a new home and community will take up a lot of their time. We remind you that you may not always be able to get a hold of them when you call and that this is an expected result of joining a college community. Please remember that we cannot respond to inquiries about a student’s activities, room number, extension, roommate, or account balance. All documents, including account information and refunds, are always delivered directly to the student.

If your resident is having any challenges or concerns in the residence, please encourage them to speak with our staff. Our staff will work with every student to ensure they are satisfied with their residence experience. In addition, our staff is always happy to answer any questions you may have, please do not hesitate to contact us.
