Sheridan celebrates success at first fall convocation

October 31, 2016

Sheridan welcomed more than 1,600 new members to its alumni community in October during the college’s first autumn convocation. Over two days, students received their diplomas, degrees and certificates in front of their loved ones at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. Chancellor Hazel McCallion opened the ceremonies by sharing her hopes for the future.

“Sheridan instills a desire in its students to go out and make a difference in the community and in whatever undertaking they do,” she said. “You’re going to make a difference. And that should be your goal and objective. There’s everything out there for you today … go for it with enthusiasm and commitment and you will be a great success.”

David Buchbinder, an award-winning trumpeter, composer and cultural innovator, also expressed his enthusiasm for the future. “You’re graduating and going out into the world in a place and at a time that is jumping with possibility,” he told students from the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design and the Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies.

David BuchbinderBuchbinder also shared his steps to a life worth living, including embracing learning and observing the world around you, not being afraid to go beyond your own comfort zone, and making time to celebrate the journey along the way. He urged all grads to look within themselves to find their creativity and put it to good use.

“No matter where you are, you can become a unique, beautiful and powerful agent of change,” he said. “I hope you grab onto the opportunity with which you have been blessed … never forget your unique beauty. Never forget your power to make positive changes.”

Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design valedictorian Michael Flax also urged fellow grads to trust in themselves as they strive for their goals. “None of us knows what the future will hold, but as we all look toward the future and the next steps, know that you are not alone. Everything we need for our future success is here in this room. In yourself, in your friendships,” said the newly minted Advanced Television and Film alumnus. "Trust your gut, trust your passion. They will lead you to perseverance ... as you persevere in your passion, you’ll find the people who will help to make your adventures pleasant. Nurture those new relationships and always remember to pay it forward when your time comes.”
