Mikhail Mutafyan

Professor, Information Systems

Mikhail joined Sheridan College as a full time Professor in 2018.

He has 30 years of teaching experience at the college and university levels. He has developed and taught many IT based courses, such as: Systems Analysis and Design, Software Engineering Methodologies, Control Theory, Telehealth, Healthcare Informatics Systems, Business Information Systems, Bioinformatics, Imaging, Data Science, Visualization for Science and Engineering, Statistics and Research Methods, Business Project Management, IT Project Management, Principles of Software Development, Operating Systems, UNIX/Linux Systems, Clinical Workflows and IT Solutions, Computer Hardware and Networks, Fiber Optics Communications, Digital Forensics, Quantitative Methods in Evaluation of Social Processes and more.

Mikhail’s strength is to work in interdisciplinary domains to create a big-picture systems vision. He has advanced research experience in statistical modeling, real-time data/signals processing and software methodologies. Mikhail successfully realized 40 large scale projects, supervised 15 PhD and post-doctoral fellows, and 50 Masters' theses. He has published over 90 papers and two books. In collaboration with students, Mikhail has developed and patented various biometric information systems.

Mikhail graduated from the National Nuclear Research University in Moscow, Russia. He holds M.Sc. & B.Sc. degrees in Experimental Nuclear Physics and a Ph.D. in Healthcare and Biomedical Research (Engineering Science). His thesis was titled The Development of Models for Computerised Visualization Processes in Biomedical Systems based on UNIX Pipeline Technologies.

Mikhail’s interdisciplinary research interests span the areas of Systems Analysis, Inventive Problem Solving, Data Analytics, Cognitive Visualization and Biometrics.

Dr. Mutafyan is PMP certified and he's also a member of PMI and a senior member of IEEE. He is professionally certified in Canadian Project Management (University of Toronto); Strategic Decisions and Risk Management (Stanford University, U.S.A.); and in the Architecture of Complex Systems (MIT, U.S.A.).
