Sheridan English for Academic Purposes (EAP) placement testing

Why do I need to complete a placement test?

Your placement test help us understand your English skills so that we can place you in the right class in Sheridan’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. After we review your results, we can place you at the correct EAP level and issue your offer letter.

What tests do I need to submit?

You must submit a valid score from one of the tests listed below. All tests are valid for two years from the test date to the start of the class.

You only need to take ONE of these tests:

How do I submit my test results?

Domestic applicants

  • Apply to Sheridan through ontariocolleges.ca.
  • Request that your IELTS (Academic), TOEFL (iBT) or Duolingo scores be sent to ontariocolleges.ca
  • Applications are reviewed in the order they are received, and the test result is received, based on space in the program.

International applicants

  • Apply to Sheridan through our international application.
  • Submit your IELTS (Academic), TOEFL (iBT) or Duolingo scores with your application.

When will I receive my offer letter and level placement?

Sheridan Admissions will send you an email 10–15 business days after we receive your test result.

Your offer letter will show your placement level in Sheridan's EAP program and explain what you need to do next.

Important information before taking your placement test:

  • Your placement test is required to ensure you are placed in the right English class level.
  • The test allows us to place you in a class that will help you improve your English language skills.
  • After completing the test, make sure your test results are sent to Sheridan.
  • Your placement test is not pass or fail.
  • If you follow the steps below, you will have a better chance of being placed in the correct level:
    • Answer all questions honestly and carefully.
    • Do your best on every question.
    • Do not guess answers.
    • Complete the test by yourself.
    • Do not use any help from other people, websites or tools when taking the test.

If you do not follow these rules, there may be serious consequences, including removal from the program.

Test scores below EAP Level 1

If your test score is below the level required for EAP Level 1, Sheridan may not be able to place you in the program. If this happens, you can take and submit a new placement test after three months.

Before taking the test again, we recommend that you:

  • Contact your local school board about English classes; or
  • Register for LINC or community ESL classes before taking the test again.

Sheridan EAP class formats (in person or online)

Some EAP levels may be offered only in certain study formats (for example, in person or fully online). Because spaces fill quickly, you may not be placed in your preferred format. Visit the EAP program page for details.
