Ian Forbes
Pilon School of Business
Degree: Business Administration - Marketing
Year of graduation: 2003
Potential Realized
The completion of my three-year diploma at Sheridan in 2003 was the beginning of a path that has led to personal and professional satisfaction.
After completing Sheridan’s Business Administration – Marketing Program, I continued my postsecondary education at Ryerson University. The skills I had obtained from Sheridan put me at a level above students who had gone directly from high school to university. I was extremely successful at Ryerson; I graduated with a 3.3 out of 4.3 GPA and was invited to (be part of) the Golden Key Honour’s Society every semester of my program.
After graduating from Ryerson with a Bachelor of Commerce specializing in Marketing Management in 2006, I moved into a full-time position at Brand Management in the position of Business Associate. Since joining Brand Management, a consulting service located in Burlington, I have assisted the Principal in growing the business and branching into new sectors such as writing for small businesses. I have had the opportunity to put into action skills I obtained from Sheridan: designing and implementing a website, writing a sales call manual for an entrepreneurial venture, as well as writing numerous marketing letters.
I owe much of my marketing skills as well as personal and professional confidence to one instructor at Sheridan –– Doug Greenwood. From the moment I stepped into my first class with him he instilled in me a confidence I was lacking. Doug took the time to show me that I was not just able to comprehend the topics we were learning but that I also had the ability to use these skills to have a successful career. It was Doug Greenwood who convinced me to participate in the Ontario College’s Marketing Competition in 2002 where along with my partner, Nick Swyszcz; we won the bronze medal in the Marketing Research contest. Doug Greenwood is the epitome of what an instructor should be. He is honest, caring, knowledgeable, and truly wants to help students realize their potential. He is someone who I will be ever grateful to and who truly helped me to become the person I am today. Sheridan students, faculty and management should feel lucky to have someone of his calibre on staff.
I would advise students of Sheridan to experience everything that Sheridan has to offer and realize that the diploma you will receive will put you in a class ahead of others. But also realize that this is just the first step in your career. Build on the skills you learn here and always state proudly that you are a Sheridan alumnus.
Current Occupation: Business Associate, Brand Management
