Alumni Take First Place in International Start-up Contest

December 12, 2012

Congratulations to Graham Kennery and Mathieu (Matt) Gosbee who are the 2012 Global Startup Battle Champions for their online research tool, Groupnotes. Graham and Mathieu were part of a team that beat out over 1,000 others from more than 60 countries in the 54-hour event in Toronto last month.

Startup Weekends are a huge series of entrepreneurial competitions that take place yearly in countries all over the world. The Toronto event is North America’s largest Startup Weekend.

The Groupnotes team, which also includes three McMaster University students, plans to launch its product officially in January, calling its product a “collaborative tool that you can use to easily share, annotate, and comment on websites.”

As first place winners, Groupnotes will be awarded over $35,000 of in-kind prizes including Google cloud, legal support, design assistance and consulting services and a $20,000 video from Switchvideo. The team will be headed to San Francisco to tour Googleplex and meet with investors, founders, and mentors and in March, they will be flying to Rio de Janeiro to participate in the annual Global Entrepreneurship Congress.

Mathieu and Graham also co-developed a tool called Carddrop which won Startup Peel held at Sheridan in October 2012. Carddrop instantly adds full profile information to any phone’s contacts from any location without the use of an application.

“I still have a feeling of disbelief that all of this has happened!,” says Graham. “We worked extremely hard to get our name out there and to introduce people to the business in hopes that they would vote for us. The hard work paid off.”

“The future is going to be busy - but rewarding,” adds Mathieu. “We'll be working non-stop getting our product to market and making sure it's the best we can possibly build it!”
