Melanie Spence-Ariemma

Dr. Melanie Spence-Ariemma assumed the role of Provost and Vice President Academic at Sheridan on August 7, 2018.

Melanie earned a B.Sc. from McMaster University, a M.R.T. in Radiation Therapy from Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre, a B.Ed. from Brock University, an M.A. from Central Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy from Niagara University.

She has a deep understanding of what it means to be both an administrator and an academic. Melanie has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the joint programs between the University of Toronto and the Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences, and Laurentian University and the Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences, the joint program between Mohawk College and McMaster University, and at Niagara University. She held various and progressive leadership positions at post-secondary institutions in Ontario prior to joining Sheridan in 2010 as an Associate Dean in the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

Since that time, Melanie has served Sheridan as the Dean, Academic Strategic Planning and Development (CTL), and Associate Vice-President, Academic Quality. She was appointed to her previous role as Vice-Provost in 2015 and, in that capacity, she oversaw all of the Academic Faculties, the Centre for Teaching and Learning, the Centre for People and Organizational and Development, and Library and Learning Services. Further, she provided leadership and support across a wide array of academic matters, including policy development, enrolment management, quality assurance, teaching excellence, pathways and partnerships.

Having worked in the post-secondary sector for 17 years, Melanie remains passionate about the experience of our students and is committed to academic quality and excellence in teaching and learning. In her time at Sheridan, Melanie has earned respect for her inclusive and transformational leadership style. She embodies the tenets of character, quality and accountability that are at the core of our academic priorities.

    Professional Advisory Councils offer Sheridan a unique strength in postsecondary education. Successful Professional Advisory Councils provide strategic advice and input in the program review process and help the College respond to changing academic, business and industry requirements. Professional Advisory Councils help ensure that our programs stay relevant to the needs within the community and anticipate future trends. Their perspective assists us to ensure that new and existing programs are relevant and curricula are up to date so that graduates will possess the skills and competencies required by employers in the current and future labour markets.
