Additional information

Sheridan's Information Systems Security degree program includes an internship of up to 28 weeks between Years 3 and 4. You'll acquire workplace skills and professional contacts while gaining real-world information systems security experience.

The classroom environment simulates workplace conditions via mobile computing. You'll work on a laptop and enjoy online access to lecture notes, assignments, and other subject material at all times, from any location. Students use mobile computing to collaborate on group projects, conduct web-based research and visit chat rooms.

Transfer students may be eligible to enter Year 2 or Year 3 of this program.

Program Eligibility

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4U)

plus

  • Any Grade 12 science (U or M) or Grade 12 Computer Science (U) or Grade 12 Computer Engineering Technology (U or M)
  • Any Grade 12 mathematics (U)
  • Three other Grade 12 credits (U or M)
  • Minimum 65% overall average

or

  • Two semesters of postsecondary education including required courses with a minimum 65% overall average

Applicant Selection

  • Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).
  • Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Sheridan's English Proficiency Requirements.

Sheridan Degree Entrance Scholarship

Ministry Consent

Sheridan has been granted a consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this degree for a further seven-year term starting June 27, 2014 and subject to renewal thereafter. Application to the Ministry for renewal of the consent is a prescribed and cyclical requirement for degree programs at all Ontario Colleges. Sheridan will ensure that all students admitted to the Honours Bachelor of Applied Information Sciences (Information Systems Security) program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame. Credentials earned during the period of consent remain valid, even if Ministry consent to offer the program is withdrawn in the future. Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs (e.g. acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies or other educational institutions).

Program Information

This 14-week Information Systems Security bridging program qualifies students to transfer into Year 2 of the Sheridan Honours Bachelor of Applied Information Sciences (Information Systems Security) program. Information Systems Security is a one-of-a-kind information science program with a stellar reputation among employers.

This bridging term consists of three courses:

  • Mathematics (3 credit hybrid delivery course)
  • Information Systems Security Overview (4 credit online course)
  • Liberal Arts elective (3 credit course)

After completing the bridging term, you'll be eligible to enrol in Year 2 as a full-time student. Once enrolled, you'll meet all remaining course requirements to earn your information science degree. You'll also be expected to meet any missing liberal arts breadth course requirements, at the bachelor degree level.

All students in this information science program work on laptop computers and have online access, 24/7, to lecture notes, assignments, presentations and other course material. Students are able to collaborate on group projects from home. See Mobile Computing for details.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility

To be eligible for bridging into Year 2, students must hold a two-year diploma in Computer Systems Technician, Computer Programming, Computer Engineering Technician, Computer Science Technician or Telecommunications Technician and have a cumulative average of at least 65% in core courses.

Applicants who have completed the first year of computer-related programs at the university level with a cumulative average of 65% in core courses will also be eligible for admission into the bridging term.

If your transcript is older than four years, you may be required to demonstrate industry currency through relevant experience.

Graduates of this program will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • Manage the security lifecycle of computer systems, databases and networks, which includes analysis, design and maintenance.
  • Develop, secure and maintain computer systems and networks to meet user requirements.
  • Use computer architecture and operating systems design principles, and theory of algorithms and data structures in security related projects.
  • Create secure software applications using object-oriented, structured, scripting and low-level programming techniques and software engineering methodologies, which pertain to development, testing and documentation activities.
  • Perform code analysis and testing for security weaknesses.
  • Apply security and threat analysis and auditing procedures and perform security vulnerability assessments.
  • Solve information systems security problems through the development and implementation of security policies and techniques.
  • Implement formal information systems security protocols and methodologies.

Bursaries for Grade 12 Students Pursuing Studies Toward a Career in Law

The annual Bursary Program for grade 12 students pursuing careers in the justice sector at an Ontario university or college is now open! Bursaries are offered by the Association of Justices of the Peace of Ontario (AJPO), the Association of Ontario Judges (AOJ) and the Ontario Superior Court Judges’ Association (OSCJA). Each association offers one bursary per year in each of their judicial regions for a total of 22 bursaries province-wide!
