Encouraging Women in Technology

Danielle Khan leads by example as a successful technology trainer and Chair of Sheridan’s Information Technology Support Services Advisory Committee for the past four years.

“As women are still under-represented in the technology field, it’s important to promote other women who are technically inclined. If I can do it, so can they,” says Danielle, who has mentored other females interested in pursuing an IT education.

A career in technology training was not part of Danielle’s original plan. After graduating from Sheridan’s Office Administration – Legal Program in 2004, she worked as a legal secretary for about two and a half years. “During this time, I gained the experience and subsequent confidence to find out what I was really good at.” Continually drawn to the technical aspect of her job, Danielle returned to the college to gain the education and experience to enter the IT field. In 2007, she graduated from the Information Technology Support Services program.

Danielle held several IT jobs before finding full time employment at Toronto law firm, Fraser Milner Casgrain where she is now a Training and Application Specialist. As a self-described “people-person”, Danielle particularly enjoys interacting with a large cross-section of people to help make their jobs easier.

“It is rewarding to see that my knowledge benefits others, and also puts a smile on their face,” says Danielle, who participated in two Windows 7/Office 2010 roll outs at two major downtown law firms in 2012.

Finding your place in the work world may take a bit of time, but it’s worth it, advises Danielle. “I have always planned with an eye towards the bigger picture. Sometimes that picture turns out differently from what you expected. Be patient; the right job is out there for everyone.”
