Industry partner: Geotab
Project Summary: High-resolution gridded temperature datasets are extremely important for many modelling applications such as regional climate prediction models, agriculture, and surface transportation systems. Currently, the primary method for gathering air temperature readings is via irregularly spaced weather stations. Most high-resolution datasets use interpolation algorithms to fit temperature curves to the station data or incorporate some models of physical processes into the interpolation methods. One of the most promising possibilities to improve the temperature datasets is the potential to use vehicles as local weather observation systems. Geotab, a Canadian based company, is a global leader in commercial fleet telematics that collects a wealth of information from Geotab’s GO device connected to vehicle’s computer including the vehicle’s location, speed, acceleration, temperature, barometric pressure, and detailed engine diagnostics. Geotab continuously collects temperature data from over two million vehicles in real-time. Due to potential errors in GO device sensor readings, the accuracy of the dataset must be analyzed and improved. In this project, we will create high accuracy real-time high‐resolution air temperature datasets desirable for ecological research, weather predictions, and surface transportation systems.Mobile app developer for lifecycle management of mobile devices - CLOSED

Mobile App Dev + ML Integrator – CLOSED
Industry partner: RBC
Project Summary: Mobile devices have physical and interaction limitations; however, machine learning approaches are showing promise on how to provide personalized content based on the user’s goals and their unique characteristics. Currently, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has a smartphone app for their clients that provides core banking functionalities, and relevant information for clients. However, there are limitations; RBC smartphone users want more relevant information and features. It is desirable to have a system that better understands the user's context, their unique perspectives, tasks and goals. This would be accomplished by creating accurate user models and a recommender system that would provide the most appropriate content to the user at a specific time and context. This research will explore creating a recommender system that will provide the most appropriate content to the smartphone user based on their user model. Recommender systems predict the preference a user would give to a particular item. Recommender systems are used in a variety of areas, such as product suggestions for online stores, playlist generators for video and music, etc. These systems can operate using a single input, such as music, or multiple inputs within and across platforms like products, news, and search queries.
In this project, the RBC and Sheridan’s Centre for Mobile Innovation (CMI) team will continue the collaboration commenced in the Fall of 2021 to create a dynamic smartphone PoC app that will provide relevant real-time content based on real-time assessments from an intelligent recommender system.

Currently, we have an initial VR environment that illustrates several features of our VR medical training facilities. Please see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K7lxBOMTqU&t=1sMilestone 1. Modeling the Operating Room for VR. This aim of this milestone is for the design/development team to learn about the design and configuration of typical Operating Rooms (OR) and the medical equipment in an OR. This knowledge will enable direct translation of real-world workflows and OR functionality into a VR design. In this milestone, we will determine the degree of desired interactivity with the medical equipment in the VR environment. We will also determine the appropriate characteristics, functionality and workflows so that the VR environment will mirror the expectations that a surgeon would expect in real world scenarios.
Milestone 2. Extend the Initial VR prototype. In this phase of the project we will apply the knowledge gained to enhance the initial VR prototype. Surgeons, clinicians and/or other stakeholders will be able to explore the VR environment and provide feedback that will inform next steps in the design and development process. Some basic VR interaction with selected Operating Room equipment will be incorporated into this initial prototype.
Milestone 3. Create a Minimum Viable Prototype (MVP). This milestone involves applying the knowledge gained from the previous milestone activities to extend the initial prototype, incorporate the feedback from various stakeholders (surgeons, clinicians, nurses, and others as appropriate) to create a minimum viable prototype (MVP).
