    Data Scientist - CLOSED
    Industry partner: Geotab
    Project Summary:
High-resolution gridded temperature datasets are extremely important for many modelling applications such as regional climate prediction models, agriculture, and surface transportation systems. Currently, the primary method for gathering air temperature readings is via irregularly spaced weather stations. Most high-resolution datasets use interpolation algorithms to fit temperature curves to the station data or incorporate some models of physical processes into the interpolation methods. One of the most promising possibilities to improve the temperature datasets is the potential to use vehicles as local weather observation systems. Geotab, a Canadian based company, is a global leader in commercial fleet telematics that collects a wealth of information from Geotab’s GO device connected to vehicle’s computer including the vehicle’s location, speed, acceleration, temperature, barometric pressure, and detailed engine diagnostics. Geotab continuously collects temperature data from over two million vehicles in real-time. Due to potential errors in GO device sensor readings, the accuracy of the dataset must be analyzed and improved.  In this project, we will create high accuracy real-time high‐resolution air temperature datasets desirable for ecological research, weather predictions, and surface transportation systems.

    Mobile Application Developer - CLOSED
    Industry partner: Closing the Gap
    Project Summary:
The scope of this project is to build a web interface for a client portal to allow CTG’s clients (actual patients receiving treatment) access to specific relevant information. This portal would be integrated in real-time with the MS Dynamics CRM platform.  This project started in Sept 2018 and we currently have an early stage prototype.  In the upcoming semester, we are planning to continue and refine the development of the system.
The following is a list of features in the portal:

    • Schedule – Shows who is coming into the home and for what service on a calendar. This is accomplished by a web-based view of a calendar system (e.g., the client can see the month of August with various appointments.) Links are provided so that the client can drill down and see relevant information for that appointment (e.g., time and length of the appointment, healthcare provider, the treatment to be performed, a brief biography and picture of the provider).
    • Provider Information – The web-based view enables the client to see a brief biography of the provider for specific appointments along with a picture and any other relevant information.  This information is retrieved from the CRM.
    • Medical Notes – The web-based view provides access to documentation related to the care the client is receiving, such as medical notes, CTG notes, etc.  This is achieved by retrieving all relevant documentations available via the CRM and/or SharePoint as appropriate.
    • Management View – The web-based view enables the client to view admission information, care plan, and their own profile.
    • Efficient rescheduling of appointments (considers driving time, care provider’s schedules and locations, etc.)

The web-based client portal uses a virtual machine on-premise at CTG with integration CTG’s MS Dynamics CRM using web services. Authentication is using using Active Directory and the site would use SSL

Mobile Computing + Machine Learning Researcher – CLOSED
    Industry partner: RBC
Project Summary: Mobile devices have physical and interaction limitations; however, machine learning approaches are showing promise on how to provide personalized content based on the user’s goals and their unique characteristics. Currently, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has a smartphone app for their clients that provides core banking functionalities, and relevant information for clients. However, there are limitations; RBC smartphone users want more relevant information and features. It is desirable to have a system that better understands the user's context, their unique perspectives, tasks and goals. This would be accomplished by creating accurate user models and a recommender system that would provide the most appropriate content to the user at a specific time and context.

This research will explore creating a recommender system that will provide the most appropriate content to the smartphone user based on their user model. Recommender systems predict the preference a user would give to a particular item. Recommender systems are used in a variety of areas, such as product suggestions for online stores, playlist generators for video and music, etc. These systems can operate using a single input, such as music, or multiple inputs within and across platforms like products, news, and search queries.

In this project, Sheridan’s Centre for Mobile Innovation (CMI) will work collaboratively with RBC to create a recommender system and a smartphone app that will provide relevant real-time content based on real-time assessments from the recommender system.

    Student Research Assistant – CLOSED
Project Summary: Due to the extensive growth and diffusion of mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, smartwatches) and their increasingly powerful capabilities, many people use mobile devices both for personal and work-related activities. Mobile technologies also enable enterprises to become more efficient, more creative and, thus, more valuable to clients. These technologies are being used to support more efficient business processes through real-time communications, quick data access, notifications and business updates. Businesses are turning to mobile technologies for improved and responsive service delivery, operational efficiencies and active client engagement.

The project will look into two aspects:

    • Physical Security: this will involve collecting data form various sensors of the mobile device and determine the health of the mobile phone/tablet. Accelerometers, gyroscope, compass etc. can be used to detect accidental falls or bumps. the app should be also able to monitor processor, RAM and storage space to find out about if the phones been overworking or not.
    • Network Security: further to physical security, we want to use the computing power of mobile phones and detect anomaly and intrusion. Specifically for cellular network where the phone/tablet is not protected by layers of firewalls and IDPS systems. This will require “Fog” computing.
