The Centre for Applied AI (formerly known as the Centre for Mobile Innovation) strives to foster research collaboration with industries and community partners by capitalizing on the diverse talents and resources available at Sheridan, including Sheridan students, faculty and equipment along with excellent funding acquisition and management capabilities.

Since its establishment in 2017, the Centre for Applied AI has actively collaborated with more than 34 partners, conducted more than 50 research projects, and successfully secured grants exceeding $12 million from federal and provincial funding agencies.

How to partner with Sheridan's Centre for Applied AI (formerly known as the Centre for Mobile Innovation)

The Centre for Applied AI offers unique opportunities for research collaboration.

To partner with the Centre for Applied AI, your organization must have been incorporated/registered in Canada more than two years ago and have at least two full-time employees.

You might be interested in partnering with the Centre for Applied AI if:

  • You're interested in unlocking the potential of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, mobile, wearable computing, augmented/virtual/mixed reality (AR/VR/MR), or Internet of Things (IoT).
  • You're facing an innovation challenge and would like to have a dedicated, high-calibre team to work on it.

Current opportunities for research collaboration:

  • Benefits to your company:
    • Collaborate with McMaster University (Computing and Software department) and Sheridan's Centre for Applied AI (formerly known as the Centre for Mobile Innovation).
    • A dedicated faculty member will lead the research project.
    • 2–3 undergraduate students from Sheridan's Honours Bachelor's Degrees (e.g., Mobile Computing, Computer Science, Cyber Security) will work as Research Assistants on your project.
    • 1–3 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from McMaster University (Software Engineering, Computer Science), PhD (Computer Science), Post-doctoral fellows will work on your project.
    • Centre for Applied AI lab space and equipment will support your project (e.g., NVIDIA DGX A100 server).
    • All intellectual property will be owned by your company/organization.
    Requirements:
    • You should contribute at least $20,000 cash/year and $20,000 in-kind/year.
    • Your research area of business should be health related.
    Timeline:

    Available immediately after scope development and signature of Collaborative Research Agreement.

  • Benefits to your company:
    • A dedicated faculty member will lead the research project.
    • 2–3 undergraduate students from Sheridan's Honours Bachelor’s Degrees (e.g., Mobile Computing, Computer Science, Cyber Security) will work as Research Assistants on your project.
    • Centre for Applied AI lab space and equipment will also support your project (e.g., NVIDIA DGX A100 server).
    • All intellectual property will be owned by your company/organization.
    Funding/Duration:
    • Up to $150,000 per year (1–3 years in duration)
    • Your organization should contribute ¼ of NSERC funds (preferred model: NSERC $80K; your organization: $20K cash plus $20K kind) – 1:4 funds matching.
    Timeline:

    1–2 months to write the grant application; 4–6 months for the NSERC review process. (So, plan 6–9 months in advance of your desired project start date.)

    Requirements:
    • Partner contribution requirements: Minimum $20,000 cash/year and $20,000 in-kind/year.
    • Area: health, mHealth, AI
