The countdown is on to the opening of the Hazel McCallion Campus Expansion
In January, 2017, the doors of the long-awaited new building at the Hazel McCallion Campus will open to greet hundreds of students eager to embark on their studies in this exceptional new facility. After an unforeseen construction delay, the building’s original opening date of September 2016 had to be pushed back to January, resulting in a hectic rush by Sheridan administrators to re-schedule classes for students in 12 programs at other Sheridan campuses for the Fall term. Today, the project is moving quickly towards completion, with the installation of IT infrastructure well underway and furniture and fixtures moving closely behind.
“We were disappointed not to meet our original opening target due to circumstances beyond our control, but are very excited to assure our students and staff that we are solidly on track for the January term,” said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and Vice Chancellor.
Once open, the new building will accommodate 3,200 students, in 29 new classrooms and 28 new studios, labs and production spaces. Among the programs making their home here will be Advertising, Marketing, Visual Merchandising, and Tourism – Global Travel – all of which complement the business diploma and degree programs currently offered at the Hazel McCallion Campus.
The new facility will also host a suite of programs centred around the built environment theme, taking advantage of the building’s purposeful design as a living lab that showcases how it will be one of the most energy efficient educational buildings in Canada. This group of programs include Architectural Technology, Architectural Technician, Interior Decorating, and Honours Bachelor of Interior Design.
In addition to learning spaces, the building also features the Institute for Creativity and Creative Campus, a Creativity Commons, and a gallery to showcase students’ creativity and innovation. Sheridan recently hired a full-time Curator, Creative Campus Galleries, who will oversee the HMC gallery as well as other Sheridan exhibition places and related programming.
Designed by Moriyami and Teshima Architects in partnership with Montgomery Sisam Architects, the 5-storey, 220,000 square foot building was conceived with Sheridan’s focus on creativity front of mind. With the new building’s opening, the Hazel McCallion Campus will be home to over 5,500 full-time studentsPopular stories
