Sheridan College students to benefit from $22M Siemens PLM software grant

Jan 6, 2016

An academic grant from Siemens Canada means Sheridan students will now have the opportunity to train on the same software used by the world’s leading manufacturers. The grant valued at $22 million Canadian (or $16 million USD) awards Sheridan a set of software licenses for Siemens’ Tecnomatix® portfolio, the industry-leading digital manufacturing software used in a wide variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, machinery, medical devices and shipbuilding.

The software licenses will be integrated into the curriculum at Sheridan’s School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Technology, and will support applied research projects at the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies (CAMDT), both located at Sheridan’s Davis Campus in Brampton, Ontario. The software will be used across multiple courses including operations management, sustainable supply chain and plant layout courses to help future graduates of Sheridan’s engineering programs become skilled and qualified in the use of one of the industry’s leading tools. This generous grant is the largest single contribution from an industry partner ever received by CAMDT.

Access to the software will help students develop the advanced skills required by the more than 77,000 global customers who already use Siemens' PLM software and technology solutions, including 29 of the world's top 30 automakers and 18 of the top 20 aircraft and engine original equipment manufacturers.

Sheridan signed a Memo of Understanding with Siemens Canada earlier this year aimed at enriching learning opportunities for students, including guest lectures, technical workshops, input into curriculum development, engineering internships and co-op placements. Sheridan College also recently became an official partner of the Siemens Canada Engineering & Technology Academy (SCETA) to deliver the Siemens Mechatronics systems certification program and is expected to launch the program delivery to students, as well as community and industry partners, in early 2016.

Siemens Canada has also donated significant equipment to CAMDT, enhancing the Centre’s ability to train the next generation of engineers.

QUOTES:

“We are deeply honoured and excited by this generous grant from Siemens, which will allow us to integrate a critical industry tool into our engineering curriculum. We are committed to reinventing engineering education to balance theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on skills, as part of our journey to become a premier undergraduate teaching university. This software will allow us to offer unparalleled training to our students in the field of mechatronics.”
 – Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and CEO, Sheridan College

“We are thrilled to have such an enthusiastic and committed academic partner in Sheridan College and are proud to be helping them empower the next generation of highly-skilled graduates. This grant provides students a unique opportunity to use real-world PLM software solutions in their research and academic work, thereby preparing them to meet the challenges of the industry in the years beyond graduation.”
