“In the GTA, there is an estimated need for 40,000-75,000 spaces for undergraduate university students,” notes Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President & CEO of Sheridan College. “Demand for business education is particularly strong given the large scale retirements of baby boomers from the professional workforce and the fact that business programs at traditional universities are running at capacity.” Peel and Halton Regions also face the additional challenges of having some of Canada’s fastest growing communities, which further drives demand for business education.Integrated, Reflective and Real-World Learning
“The first two years of the new BBA degrees will be common, in order to provide a solid grounding in business fundamentals,” explains Sylvia Lowndes, Dean of the Faculty of Business. In addition to choosing one of the five areas of specialization, students are able to select one of three inter-disciplinary options -- International Business, Innovation & Entrepreneurship or Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability. “This will build their capacity to respond to new situations in a rapidly changing world and help them succeed personally and professionally in ways that better society.”“The new degrees also feature an innovative educational approach that guides the students through critical thinking, awareness, and evaluation of processes, in order to draw and articulate defensible conclusions,” adds Lowndes. “In their final year students must also complete a community based Integrated Industry Project or Research Thesis. In parallel with their academic studies, students develop a Creative Learning Portfolio which fosters self-awareness, reflective practice and an open mindset through the integration of activities.”
Building on Success
The five new degrees will build on the proven success of Sheridan’s BBA Degree in Global Business Management and Sheridan’s Advanced Business Administration Diplomas and Business Graduate Certificate Programs. Graduates of existing two year business diplomas and three year advanced business diploma programs at Sheridan and other Ontario colleges will be eligible for advanced standing in these programs. This will open an important pathway for students who previously may have felt that a degree credential was out of reach. By 2017, Sheridan expects to have 1,100 BBA students registered in all five BBA degree programs.About Sheridan
