Celebrating International Education at Sheridan

Sheridan Webinar Series to Promote and Enhance Internationalization of Education

November 16, 2020

In celebration of International Education Week, Sheridan's Centre for Global Education and Internationalization (CGEI) is hosting a series of webinars designed to raise awareness of international education, rethink institutional practices and mobilize forces to contribute towards a more sustainable and equitable world.

Over the next seven days, esteemed panelists from Sheridan and invited subject matter experts from across Canada, the United States, Europe and Brazil will discuss such topics as how research, pedagogy and community/industry partnerships enhance internationalization and global engagement; the role post-secondary institutions play in promoting equity, cultural and social responsiveness; and ways to provide students with intercultural learning experiences.

"International engagement is indispensable to enhance our teaching and learning, research and community service," says CGEI Director Dr. Amira El Masri. "These webinars will expose our community to new internationalization perspectives, approaches, pedagogies and practices through interaction with national and international experts, scholars and practitioners."

The series will begin Tuesday, Nov. 17 (11 a.m-12:30 p.m. EST) with "The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to Reorient Internationalization of Higher Education", which will discuss emerging practices to embed the UN SDGs into into internationalization efforts of post-secondary institutions.

"Inclusive Internationalization", scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 18 (12:30-2 p.m.), will explore how post-secondary institutions can better unite a divided world through building bridges, connecting the local with the global, disrupting social inequalities and collaboratively solving complex global issues.

The series will conclude Monday, Nov. 23 (12-1:30 p.m.) with "Collaborative Online International Learning - Connecting Classrooms Across the Globe", an introduction to project-based methodology that provides students with collaboratively-developed, co-taught intercultural learning experiences.

Registration is required to attend the webinars, and registration for the final webinar is limited to Sheridan faculty, staff and international partners. Registration links and more information on each webinar, including a list of speakers and moderators, can be found on Sheridan's International Education Week webpage.

Individuals, schools, colleges, businesses and governments around the world have celebrated International Education Week during the third week of November since 2001. In addition to marking a chance to promote and discuss the importance of international and global education, International Education Week also serves as a catalyst for building understanding and collaboration across and between institutions.

"Internationalization is an intentional and holistic process to bring a global dimension to all aspects of post-secondary education," says Sheridan President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Janet Morrison. "Done well, it fuels academic quality and prepares graduates to make meaningful contributions to society, both locally and globally."
