You're a senior level secondary school student who wants to explore an interest in a career in marketing, possibly as a retail pharmacy assistant.

Because this course is delivered in an intensive format over seven weeks, please check with your guidance counselor and language teacher to make sure you have the necessary English skills to be successful. You need to be able to listen, speak, read and write at the senior level of your ELL program, and you should be at least 17 years old and living in north Peel. Enrollment in a co-op term or an alternative education program is preferred. You will be provided with public transit tickets to get to and from the college campus for your classes.

What Will I Learn/Do?

You will take one course: In the Fundamentals of Marketing, you will learn the basics of marketing, starting with an understanding of what marketing is and how new marketing opportunities are identified. The Fundamentals of Marketing course will give you a better understanding of marketing. Environmental analysis will be stressed throughout the course. You will learn how to segment markets, develop positioning strategies, and prepare basic marketing plans involving product or service issues, pricing, distribution, and communications strategies. The Fundamentals of Marketing course will give you a better understanding of marketing.

Course Descriptions:

Marketing 1

Students are introduced to the fundamental processes and concepts of marketing and how they are applied to today's business environment. Students gain an overview of the market environment, market research, consumer behaviour, business to business marketing, marketing metrics and the roles of segmentation, targeting and positioning. Learning experiences include classroom lecture/discussion and self-directed learning through research and presentations.

If you enjoyed your dual credit program and have decided you'd like a career as a Retail Pharmacy Assistant, you can apply for the full-time Retail Pharmacy program at Sheridan's Davis Campus. Here are some fast facts about the program:

  • The Retail Pharmacy Assistant program is a one year Ontario College Certificate program.
  • As the scope of practice for pharmacists and registered pharmacy technicians expands into higher levels of expertise, the role of the pharmacy assistant is becoming critical to the operational effectiveness of the retail pharmacy.
  • After completion of the certificate program, you’ll be well prepared to assist pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with day-to-day tasks in compliance with current legislation and policies, and to provide excellent patient care and customer service.
  • If you're accepted into the program, the Fundamentals of Marketing dual credit course you’ve completed successfully will be counted as a course already completed in your full time Retail Pharmacy Assistant certificate program.

Further Academic/Career Pathways: 

When you successfully complete the Retail Pharmacy Assistant full time Certificate program, you'll be ready to start your career as a pharmacy assistant in a retail dispensary! You'll be prepared to look for a job in a retail or hospital pharmacy where you'll be part of a professional pharmaceutical care team. If you enjoy this Certificate program, you may decide to apply for the Pharmacy Technician program at Sheridan, which would give you the specialized training and allow you to work as a registered pharmacy technician.
