What Will I Learn/Do?

You'll be taking three courses: one that will give you some basic construction skills, one that will give you some insight into machining and one course that will teach you how to stay safe on the job.

Course Descriptions:

Introduction to Industrial Trades

Students are introduced to a variety of machining techniques applicable to the machining and tooling manufacturing sectors such as: Tool and Die Maker, Tooling Tool Maker, General Machinist, Machine Tool Builder and Integrator, Pattern Maker. Students practise the safe setup and operation of different types of machine tools including: engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, pedestal grinders.

Students are taught safe lifting techniques, as well as rigging and hoisting. Students also learn to assemble and disassemble mechanical equipment such as motors, gear boxes etc. Students are exposed to the basic fundamentals of oxy-fuel cutting, brazing and welding, plasma cutting, as well as shielded metal arc welding.

Manufacturing Trade Safety

Students learn how to work safely in a potentially dangerous environment. Specifically, they learn how to identify hazardous conditions and how to prevent workplace accidents. Personal, workplace and welding machinery/equipment safety are emphasized throughout the course. Students learn how to research safety-related issues (i.e. legislation and regulations) using the internet. Students participate in interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and role plays.

Pathways to Full Time Sheridan Programs:

Your dual credit program offers you the chance to get a head start on the full time one year Technology Fundamentals program, which offers an Ontario College Certificate. If you apply and are offered admission to this full time program, the courses you complete successfully in your dual credit program will be counted as already completed.

Further Academic/Career Pathways:

The Technology Fundamentals program provides a pathway for individuals who would like to become apprentices or proceed into further college programs leading to jobs as technicians/technologists in a diverse set of industries, namely, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering architecture, energy systems and electromechanical. After program completion, job opportunities may also be available in technical marketing since this program covers the basics of all technical fields.
