What Will I Learn/Do?

You'll be taking two courses that focus on core areas of knowledge needed in the electrical trade, covering electrical codes and regulations along with construction drawings, as well as key principles of direct current electricity and components, with an opportunity to apply your learning in a lab environment.

Course Descriptions:

Residential Prints & Standards

In this course you’ll learn to interpret electrical codes, regulations and residential construction drawings. This skill and knowledge will enable you to plan and layout the electrical installation of a typical home. You will also be taught how to search for and find the information required to independently complete a material list necessary in the electrical construction of a residential service and the associated branch circuits.

Electricity 1

In this course, you will be presented with the important concepts of direct-current (DC) electricity which forms an essential background for further electrical and electronics studies. After an introduction to the vast applications of electrical technology in our modern industrial society, the course will focus on these fundamental concepts (the first principles): computations in electricity, voltage and current; resistance of electrical conductors; resistors and their colour-code; Ohm’s Law; power; and energy. You will also have an opportunity to apply these principles of analysis and design of series circuits, parallel circuits and the series-parallel circuit. Laboratory work, problem-solving and trouble-shooting is an integral part of the course.


Trade Safety 1

Working safely is important. In this course you are taught how to stay safe in a potentially dangerous environment. You will learn about the common causes of workplace accidents and how to foresee and prevent them from happening. Personal and workplace safety while working with plumbing equipment are emphasized throughout the course. Successful completion of the first aid and CPR training leads to a First Aid Standard with Level C CPR certification.

Pathways to Full Time Sheridan Programs:

Your dual credit program offers you the chance to get a head start on the full time one year Electrical Techniques program, which offers an Ontario College Certificate. If you apply and are offered admission to this full time program, the courses you compete successfully in your dual credit program will be counted as already completed.

Further Academic/Career Pathways:

Sheridan is recognized for excellence in skilled trades instruction. Our graduates have an outstanding track record, and employers seek them out for electrical apprenticeships. The one-year Electrical Techniques certificate program is the gateway to a full electrician apprenticeship. To be eligible for an apprenticeship program at Sheridan, you must be employed and sponsored by an employer. In the Sheridan Skilled Trade Apprenticeship Training programs you will be involved for approximately four years of off-the-job (in-school) and on-the-job (at the workplace) learning. During this time, you will build your knowledge and hone your skills in the Electrical trade. You may also want to continue your education in related Electromechanical Technician and Technology programs which have a very high graduate employment rate and a very broad range of career pathways such as telecommunications, manufacturing, digital audio and video, internet services, power and energy systems and more.
