Growing up with a passion for mathematics education, Heather completed her Bachelor of Mathematics with a Computer Science minor (University of Waterloo) and Bachelor of Education (Queen’s University). She starting her career teaching high school mathematics and computer science, and in 2002, began teaching at Sheridan College.
Heather has taught various courses in the Pilon School of Business and Continuing and Professional Studies, including Business Mathematics, Finance, Business Communications, Statistics, and Advanced Statistics. As well, she has helped students achieve success in mathematics and statistics as a subject specialist in the Learning Centre. Heather enjoys making a connection with her students and being part of the chemistry that evolves by breaking down the barriers they have with mathematics. She endeavours to demonstrate how the subject matter (statistics, especially) applies to their studies, as well as appreciate its practical applications.
In addition to teaching part-time at Sheridan, Heather has tutored grades 7-12 mathematics since volunteering as a high school peer tutor. Through tutoring, she delights in focusing on individual student success, and witnessing “light bulb” moments. In 2012, she became owner of Learn Tutorial Services Inc., which allows her to connect with other teachers and families in her community, and create optimal tutor-student pairings.
Since her children have started school full time, Heather has reconnected with her love of learning. She completed her accounting certificate in 2016, and plans to refine her knowledge base of university level mathematics, to better support her students. In her spare time, Heather enjoys early-morning brisk walks, pilates, learning piano with her daughters, and family time.
