Apply your creativity and passion for design to help brands succeed

If you’re a creative hands-on learner that loves to collaborate with like-minded individuals, our Visual Merchandising Arts program could be a great fit. In this dynamic two-year diploma program, you’ll learn how to develop exciting and memorable installations for big and small brands both online and in-store. You’ll also develop a greater understanding of how brands attract consumers, maximize their engagement, and motivate them to buy.

Get ready for a career in visual merchandising with hands-on experience

  • Collaborate on installations from concept to creation including retail windows, pop-up shops, and interior retail environments
  • Use visual storytelling for social, digital, and physical branding and marketing
  • Style for fashion, products, and interiors for use in both media and physical retail environments
  • Engage in hands-on fabrication of sustainable prop and fixture design

At our LEED-certified Hazel McCallion Campus in the heart of Mississauga, you’ll have access to a dedicated visual merchandising studio and prop room; window display environments; a material resource room; our cutting-edge sustainable Material Connexions Library (one of only two in Canada!); a wood shop; fabrication facilities; and a large-format printing centre.

Working in state-of-the-art facilities under the guidance of practicing professors who are well-connected to industry, you’ll be on your way to a successful professional career in visual merchandising.

Dive into the industry through an exciting field placement

You’ll have the opportunity to select from a curated list of leading industry partners to complete your 160 hours of field placement. During this placement you'll be able to apply the skills you’ve learned and build your professional network. Field placement hosts offer experiences in retail merchandising, styling, fabrications, marketing, branding, events and digital marketing.

Program Eligibility

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:

  • One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)

or

Mature student status.

Applicant Selection

Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).

Learning Outcomes

The successful completion of this program will enable the graduate to:

  • Present and coordinate merchandise so that related goods are shown in a unique, desirable, and saleable manner.
  • Use both written and oral English that emphasizes good organization, clarity, correct grammar which is appropriate for communication purposes in the business environment.
  • Understand the fundamentals of basic financial problems, and use good reason in financial decision making.
  • Work with a wide variety of materials (paper, cardboard, plastic, foamcore, wood, laminate, fabric) to solve two and three dimensional design problems.
  • Apply basic design principles and colour theories to the construction of promotional displays and advertising.
  • Use photography to record displays and advertising, and integrate knowledge of the photographic process into advertising and display design.
  • Appreciate how the history of art and design influence current display practice and contemporary images.
  • Understand the basic functions of retail store operations including store location and layout, shopping centre analysis, retail market segmentation and strategies, and the merchandising mix.
  • Prepare and execute displays for exhibitions and promotional events using the visual dynamics of light as a design element.
  • Prepare illustrative matter and layout for posters and advertising using graphic design principles including perspective, lettering, and logo design.
  • Understand basic personnel functions such as interviewing techniques, basic supervisory skills, motivation, and written and non verbal communication.
  • Understand basic promotion and advertising including various media for retail advertising (newspaper, radio, direct mail) and the design, layout, and production of ads and promotional point of purchase material.
  • Design and build scale models and props suitable for use in display and exhibition.
  • Use basic display skills such as covering, stapling, and mounting.

International Entrance Scholarship

All new international students beginning their full-time postsecondary studies (ESL excluded) in Spring 2022, Fall 2022 or Winter 2023 semesters in Year 1 (Semester 1) will receive an entrance scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $2,000.

Bursaries for Grade 12 Students Pursuing Studies Toward a Career in Law

The annual Bursary Program for grade 12 students pursuing careers in the justice sector at an Ontario university or college is now open! Bursaries are offered by the Association of Justices of the Peace of Ontario (AJPO), the Association of Ontario Judges (AOJ) and the Ontario Superior Court Judges’ Association (OSCJA). Each association offers one bursary per year in each of their judicial regions for a total of 22 bursaries province-wide!

Computer Science Specializations

In our Honours Bachelor of Computer Science program, you'll learn foundational skills that prepare you to work in any area of computer science. But you’ll also have the chance to specialize in one of four emerging fields that interests you the most.

In the first year of the program, you’ll be introduced to each of these four fields: cloud computing, data analytics, game engineering, and network engineering.

Then, you’ll focus your studies on your selected specialization. You’ll take eight courses in your specialization of choice, gaining specific skills that are not taught in traditional diploma and degree programs.
