Updates on the Faculty Strike

The collective agreement for academic staff (faculty, counsellors and librarians) at all of Ontario’s 24 public colleges expired on September 30, 2017. No new contract agreement has been reached.

Strike action at Ontario's public colleges, including Sheridan, commenced on Monday, October 16.

On November 16, the Ontario Labour Relations Board announced that the majority of striking academic employees across Ontario voted to reject the Colleges’ latest offer of settlement.

The two sides returned to the bargaining table on November 16. A settlement was not reached. The colleges offered arbitration to end the strike. The Ontario Government is tabling legislation to end the dispute and enable students to return to class. The Legislature is expected to reconvene to review the proposed legislation. It is not known yet when classes will resume.

The Sheridan community will be notified as more information becomes available. The colleges remain committed to keeping our students’ learning the top priority.

How is Sheridan planning to adjust the fall 2017 semester to make up lost instruction time? (Updated November 10)

We are modelling scenarios to ensure that students will have sufficient class time to meet the learning outcomes associated with their programs, and will have the opportunity to complete the fall semester.

We can now share that Sheridan will need to use the week of December 18 – 22 to make up lost instruction time. Should classes return after November 22, we will also need to use the week of January 2-5, 2018 for instruction. Should classes resume after November 27, the fall semester would be extended to January 15, 2018. Some program completion plans include the possibility of evening and/or weekend course instruction.

As previously announced, Sheridan will endeavour to provide travel accommodations to students who made travel plans prior to October 30, 2017 and show proof of booking.
