Sheridan EDGE client LinkMentalHealth wins at CNE pitch competition

September 05, 2019

LinkMentalHealth, a member of EDGE – Sheridan’s entrepreneurship hub – won the top prize in the Health and Wellness category at the CNE Innovation Garage’s Emerging Innovators Pitch Competition on the weekend of August 24.

The competition aims to spotlight imaginative and inspiring inventors and offers more than $50,000 in prize money. It received applications from hundreds of new ventures and LinkMentalHealth was one of 30 to make it to the final pitch showcase.

LinkMentalHealth is the navigational solution to the complexity that pervades the mental health system. The online platform matches people to mental health services that best fit their specific needs (ethnicity, sexual orientation, specialty, etc.) and connects them to the calendars of therapists, reducing the process from months to minutes. For employers looking to reduce absenteeism and disability claim costs, LinkMe provides a company portal that integrates their health benefits and proactively gets employees the help they need.

“Most people know about their dental coverage and plans but more than 75% of people don’t know about the mental health benefits offered through their schools or workplaces,” says LinkMentalHealth co-founder Radwan Al-Nachawati. He was compelled to launch the platform after experiencing his own challenges navigating the health system for appropriate mental health supports.

His team’s venture has been receiving support through EDGE for the past year, benefiting from its network of mentors and business supports and space at Sheridan’s Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga.“Through EDGE, we’ve managed to connect over 1,500 people to mental health services, many of whom are postsecondary students,” says Al-Nachawati.

Renee Devereaux, Director of Changemaking and Entrepreneurship at Sheridan and EDGE’s visionary says: “Our whole team at EDGE team is thrilled to see LinkMentalHealth recognized for their innovative work in the area of mental health. Radwan and his team have been an enthusiastic part of our EDGE community, contributing to the culture of collaboration in our space.” Since opening its doors in 2017, EDGE has supported more than 150 start-ups, many with a focus on social entrepreneurship.

As the winners in their category, Al-Nachawati and his LinkMentalHealth colleagues received a $5,000 cheque. They also had the opportunity to staff a booth at the CNE Innovation Garage and spoke with crowds of people about their platform. Moving forward, they plan to continue growing the number of clients using their platform with the overarching goal of making mental health support more accessible for everyone.
