Peer Mentor Program

How can I become a Peer Mentor?

We would love to have you on our team! If you're interested in applying for a Peer Mentor position, please:

  2. Review the Peer Mentor Job Description and submit your resume

Please note:

  • You must be entering your 2nd year of studies or higher
  • You must have a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • A completed resume must be submitted in order for you to be considered

As a Peer Mentor, you will have the opportunity to support students by planning events and activities, developing workshops, providing guidance and support, and connecting students to campus and community services. You will play a pivotal role during new student orientation as each Peer Mentor is required to work at orientation activities at their home campus.

Being a Peer Mentor can be beneficial to you both personally and professionally! As a Peer Mentor, you’ll experience the following:

  • Sense of reward from assisting fellow students
  • Mentorship & goal-setting with professional staff
  • Opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills through experience and reflection
  • Deeper connection to the campus community
  • Meet other students with similar interests
  • Enjoy a great job on campus that works around your schedule

The guiding philosophy of the Peer Mentor Program is “student helping students”. Senior students are hired to assist their fellow students with their transition to post-secondary life by ensuring success through guidance, encouragement, and knowledge of important resources and information.

Mentoring Areas:

Mentoring positions are available primarily within the Student Affairs department, but also in various academic programs. Please see below for mentoring positions by department.

Student Affairs Peer Teams:

  • Centre for Indigenous Learning & Support
  • Accessible Learning
  • Athletics and Recreation
  • Career Centre
  • Cooperative Education
  • Counselling Services
  • Health Services
  • Library Services
  • International Centre
  • Student Advisement Centre – First Year Connections Peers (FYC)
  • Student Leadership and Engagement
  • Entrepreneurship and Changemaking

Academic Peer Teams:

  • Child and Youth Worker program
  • Social Service Worker program
  • Police Foundations program

Types of Mentoring:

The work conducted by the Peer Mentors varies from department to department but general duties include:

  • One on one peer mentoring
  • Group mentoring
  • The provisioning and sharing of necessary information and resources
  • The creation and delivery of awareness/hallway campaigns
  • The planning of events to inform and engage students

How can I meet with a Peer?

Each department within Student Affairs has assigned and trained Peer Mentors on their team. If you would like to meet with a Peer Mentor come in and visit us at the Get Involved Offices:

  • Trafalgar: B189 (Beside Security)
  • Davis: B206 (Across from the Health Centre)
  • HMC: Table at the Atrium (next to the help desk)
