SHERIDAN SMOKE-FREE POLICY

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Sheridan has adopted a new smoke-free policy, which will see all of its campuses become 100% smoke-free as of October 17, 2018

As such, smoking any form of tobacco and/or cannabis, vaping and use of e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (commonly known as chewing tobacco) will not be permitted anywhere on Sheridan campuses as of October 17, 2018. The new policy accords with Ontario legislation which makes consumption of recreational cannabis in the workplace illegal. In accordance with applicable legislation and the Workplace Accommodation Policy, Sheridan will provide accommodation for the medical use of cannabis.

About Us

Accessible Learning facilitates equitable access for eligible students with disabilities by coordinating appropriate academic accommodations and support services. Accommodation plans and services are tailored to correspond with the disability-related needs of each student and are determined based on the documentation provided and program specific requirements. We continually strive to cultivate a college culture that is sensitive and responsive to the needs of students. Emphasis is placed on students' ability and independence to empower them to realize their academic potential and personal responsibilities.

PRACTICE AND SERVICE GUIDELINES

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Sheridan believes that all qualified students should have the opportunity to be successful in their college program. We support the student's right and responsibility to self-advocate and encourage the building of independence.

CONFIDENTIALITY AND INFORMATION RELEASE

In accordance with the law, Accessible Learning is committed to ensuring that all information regarding a student's particular disability will be maintained as strictly confidential. Any information that is collected is used for the benefit of the student.

DISCLOSURE

In order to be eligible to receive any type of accommodation, a student must identify to Accessible Learning staff and provide appropriate and current documentation. All information will be kept confidential unless (a) a student poses a threat to self or others or (b) the law requires the release of information. Even in these situations, a student would be informed and only pertinent information would be communicated.

Accessible Learning staff may consult with colleagues or a supervisor to improve their skills, and to provide a student with the highest quality services possible. Occasionally, Accessible Learning staff are approached by faculty and staff to discuss ways to handle particular information. This is typically done without identifying information in order to protect the student’s privacy.

Notes and records are maintained in our databases and accessed only by authorized staff members. The notes are available to other Accessible Learning staff and Advisors in cases where you may subsequently see a different Advisor to avoid the recounting of your circumstances. Accessible Learning will retain a copy of all information provided for a minimum of ten years after the student's last contact with Sheridan.

All information provided to the Accessible Learning is protected by the College's Privacy and Freedom of Information Policy.
