A team of Sheridan Honours Bachelor of Animation students finished first out of more than 700 competitors from 38 countries at this year's prestigious 24 HOURS Animation Contest for Students, marking the third time in five years that a Sheridan team has claimed the number one spot.

Sheridan's FIVEGUYS team of Fae Bai, Victoria Liblin, Minie Han, Cindy Huo and Rayna Liu won the top prize for their 30-second animated short, four points more than the runner-up squad from contest-host California State University Long Beach. Another Sheridan entry, 500lb Tungsten Cube, claimed third place.

Five other Sheridan teams placed in the top 13 of the international contest, which challenges students to produce a film within 24 hours of learning what the film's topic should be. This year's theme was "Everyone Calm Down."

“We are extremely proud of all our teams of students who competed in this year’s 24 HOURS Animation Contest for Students,” says Mark Jones, Dean of Sheridan’s Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. “In addition to providing valuable collaborative experience and an opportunity to test skills on a global stage, these competitions serve as excellent preparation for careers in the screen industries where rapid problem solving and creativity are imperative.”

"As a professor who teaches first-year courses, it is exciting to see our students develop their skills as animated filmmakers. It is even more rewarding to see them progress into fourth year, where they are making their thesis films and expressing their artistic voice. It is exciting to see them test their craft in events like the 24 HOURS Animation Contest for Students,” adds Mario Positano, coordinator of Sheridan’s Honours Bachelor of Animation program. “Our students inspire me every day."

Sheridan was recently named Canada's top animation college for the eighth consecutive year, according to Animation Career Review's annual rankings. In addition to its Honours Bachelor of Animation degree program, Sheridan also offers graduate programs in Computer Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Creature Animation - Technical Direction; recently introduced an Honours Bachelor of 3D Animation and Emerging Technologies degree; and this fall launched Canada's first master's degree in animation, game design and immersive technologies.
