Sheridan grad Maggie Kang and her movie, KPop Demon Hunters, swept their way through the 53rd Annie Awards on the weekend, with the smash-hit film claiming all 10 categories it was nominated in, including Best Feature.

Handed out annually by ASIFA-Hollywood, the Annies cover 32 categories, plus four juried awards, and were created in 1972 to honour excellence in cinema and television animation.

Kang (Animation ’04), who originated the film’s story, won for Best Direction along with co-creator Chris Appelhans, and Best Writing with Appelhans and two others. The movie, which tells the story of a fictional K-pop group that also secretly battles demons, also won for: Best FX, Best Character Animation, Best Character Design, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Voice Acting, and Best Editorial.

The movie also won a pair of Golden Globes in January for best Motion Picture – Animated and Best Original Song - Motion Picture, and has been nominated for a pair of Oscars, which are handed out next month.

In addition, LightBox Expo — co-founded by Sheridan alumnus Bobby Chiu (Animation, ’02) — was honoured with a special achievement award. LightBox Expo is a gathering of artists who work in the entertainment industry in films, animation, games, TV, and illustrations.

“We are so happy for Maggie and Bobby — a pair of industry-leading Sheridan grads — to be recognized this way,” says Mark Jones, Dean of the Faculty of Animation, Arts & Design (FAAD). “That both would be honoured by their animation peers speaks volumes, not only for their creative talents, but also for the training and development they received at Sheridan.”

Graduates from the College were littered amongst the credits for many of the nominees, with dozens involved in the creation of ElioHow To Train Your DragonZootopia 2The Bad Guys 2, and Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, in roles spanning from director and storyboard artist, to animator, effects artist, and writer.

Sheridan’s Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design (FAAD) is the top animation school in Canada and continues to find new ways to respond to needs of creative industries, helping students unlock innovation and success. Most recently, FAAD launched Canada’s first master’s in animation, games, and immersive experiences. Last year, Sheridan was named as an Apple Distinguished School, launched the Honours Bachelor of 3D Animation and Emerging Technologies (3DAET), and unveiled Nova, an interdisciplinary initiative designed to explore changes in creative industries.
