Sheridan proudly celebrated more than 3,800 graduates this week as they crossed the stage at the college’s 66th convocation, marking a significant milestone for students who are prepared to contribute their skills, creativity and leadership to communities and workplaces across Canada and beyond. Seven winter convocation ceremonies took place from Tuesday, March 10 to Thursday, March 12 at the Embassy Grand Convention Centre and Banquet Hall in Brampton, Ont.
These ceremonies also marked a special moment in the college’s history as Sheridan welcomed its ninth President and Vice Chancellor, Dr. Cindy Gouveia, in an installation ceremony which immediately preceded the convocation ceremonies.
“Our shared purpose at Sheridan is to ensure that every student who walks through our doors leaves with both skills for employment and the confidence to build a meaningful career and engagement with their communities,” said Dr. Gouveia. “Colleges hold transformative power as places where learners from all backgrounds can discover their potential and find where they belong.”
Graduands were welcomed to Convocation with a trilingual version of the national anthem, sung in English, French and Anishinaabemowin, as well as a land acknowledgment by former Chief Claire Sault of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Indigenous graduates were presented with a hand-beaded thunderbird pin created by beading artist Bead and Bloomwork on behalf of Sheridan’s Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement.
Highlights of the ceremonies included musical performances by 2025 Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre program graduates Ariana Bonifaz, Emma Reynolds and Sydney Brown and a keynote address by Dr. Gouveia. Each ceremony was livestreamed. Sheridan's winter convocation grew the college’s alumni community to more than 240,000 members.
“I'm honoured to join the Sheridan community and to welcome over 3,800 new graduates to our alumni community at convocation,” said Dr. Gouveia. “The students who cross the stage this week have built a strong foundation with their college education. They are prepared to contribute, to adapt and to lead in a world filled with challenges.”
