New graduate certificate program trains learners to shape future of financial technology
Registration is now open for a new Sheridan program that teaches skills to join and shape the growing field of financial technology (FinTech.)
The one-year Financial Technology graduate certificate program builds technical and strategic competencies used in fintech, a field that blends finance, data and digital tools to innovate and improve payment processing, banking, security, investing and other financial services. Designed for students who already have a diploma or degree in finance, business or computer programming, the program includes flexible delivery options that support working professionals, career changers and students from outside the Greater Toronto Area.
Canada has taken recent steps to increase its international fintech presence, including the passing of the Consumer-Driven Banking Act — legislation that allows Canadians and businesses to securely share financial data with third parties other than banks. A 2025 report by KPMG International stated that a record $9.5 billion US was invested in Canadian FinTechs in 2024, and Toronto — the second-largest financial centre in North America, behind only New York City — is home to more than 1,600 fintech startup companies.
“This program is designed for people who want modern, in-demand skills and flexible career options. Students learn how finance, data, and technology come together in today’s financial services, then go deeper into areas like AI, predictive analytics, blockchain and cybersecurity,” says Marcie Theoret, Associate Dean for the Financial Technology program in Sheridan's Pilon School of Business. “Learners will graduate with practical experience using industry tools, applied projects, a capstone, and an optional co-op so they can build a career in financial services, join a fintech startup, or explore entrepreneurship in digital finance.”
The first semester of Financial Technology teaches fundamentals of finance, technology, data science and artificial intelligence (AI), and business law and ethics. The second semester will then build on that knowledge with in-depth courses in AI, machine learning, predictive analytics, blockchain and other emerging technologies.
Students will also gain hands-on experience using the latest tools and software, including Power BI and Excel, SQL, cloud technologies, AI tools, Python, R, data analysis software and fintech APIs. Applied learning exercises will include labs, case studies, group projects and a final capstone, and the program also features an optional co-op that can provide up to 360 hours of real-world experience.
Flexible delivery options include in-person and online formats. Many classes are scheduled during evening hours, and at least one course per semester will be held on weekends.
