To help launch a career in health care, Sheridan is offering a tuition-free accelerated training program this summer that can qualify students to become personal support workers (PSWs) in just six months.

The Personal Support Worker – Accelerated certificate program provides the same training as Sheridan’s one-year Personal Support Worker program, but in a condensed time period. Tuition fees, ancillary fees and field placement stipends for eligible students are covered through funding by the Government of Ontario to address a shortage of PSWs in the public health care system.

Two cohorts will be offered in the program this summer, with classes beginning July 4 and August 8, respectively. All courses will be delivered remotely, with the exception of a Skills Lab course that will be taught in Sheridan’s well-equipped PSW lab at its Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga.

“Personal support workers play a fundamental role in Ontario’s health care system by enhancing the quality of life of vulnerable individuals in our long-term care and acute care facilities as well as in community settings,” says Sheridan Applied Health and Community Studies Associate Dean Dr. Maryam Niapour. “Sheridan is thrilled to offer this streamlined and accessible path for anyone who wants to pursue a career in health care while also helping address our province’s shortage of qualified and skilled workers in this field and being part of the path forward as we recover from the pandemic.”

Students who complete Sheridan’s PSW or PSW – Accelerated programs may also qualify for entry into Sheridan’s PSW to Practical Nursing pathway, a four-month accelerated program that provides students with knowledge and academic requirements for admission into Sheridan’s Practical Nursing diploma program.
