Sheridan places Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP) incubator on hold

CMTP is Canada’s first incubator dedicated to the development of new works of musical theatre. After ten years of success, Sheridan has made the difficult decision to put the work of the incubator on hold, following the news received earlier today that its founder and Producing Artistic Director, Michael Rubinoff, is resigning from his position at Sheridan.

Rubinoff joined Sheridan 10 years ago, during which time he served as an Associate Dean of Visual and Performing Arts, the Producer of Theatre Sheridan and the Producing Artistic Director of the Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP) which he founded at Sheridan in 2011.

Under his leadership, the Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance program transitioned from a three-year diploma to a four-year Honours Bachelor’s degree and added the CMTP capstone project. Over 26 projects have been incubated through CMTP, adding to the catalogue of musical works created in Canada. Several works have enjoyed their professional premiers, including the run-away Broadway hit Come From Away. 

Work will begin during the Spring/Summer term to review the future direction of the CMTP. Once details have been finalized, a further update will be shared.

In keeping with an announcement that was made in November 2020, Theatre Sheridan will be moving from under the umbrella of Sheridan Research/CMTP back to residing within the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design effective May 1, 2021, under the portfolio of the Associate Dean, Visual and Performing Arts, and it will continue to operate.

Rubinoff conveyed to the college that it has been an extraordinary privilege for him to work and create at Sheridan over the last decade and that witnessing the numerous accomplishments of students has been his greatest joy. He further noted that as we come to the end of the academic year and with new and exciting leadership announced for the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, it is the right time.
