Sheridan students take home two medals at Skills Ontario competition
Sheridan students took home two medals in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright category at the 29th annual Skills Ontario competition, held May 7-9 at the Toronto Congress Centre. Skills Ontario is Canada’s largest skilled trade and technology competition.
Fourteen talented and ambitious Sheridan students participated in the competition, representing Sheridan in the Precision Machining, Welding, Architectural Technology & Design, Automation & Control, Electrical Installations, Industrial Mechanic Millwright, IT and Network Support, Plumbing and Web Design and Development categories. Congratulations to Jake Doan, who won Gold and Scott Powless, who took home Bronze in the Industrial Mechanic Millwright competition, for their outstanding performance at Skills Ontario. Jake will next represent Sheridan at Skills Canada as a member of Team Ontario in Edmonton on June 4 and 5. As both a skilled millwright student and a significant contributor to the School of Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship, Jake has been highly engaged with the School of Skilled Trades in our machine shop and millwrighting facilities at our new campus. Both Jake and Scott were sponsored in their apprenticeships by Magna International.
“All of us at Sheridan are very proud of Jake and Scott for their outstanding performance at Skills Ontario, and are excited to have Jake represent us at Skills Canada this spring!” says Dave Wackerlin, Interim Vice Dean of Sheridan’s Faculty of Applied Science and Technology (FAST). “Additionally, I would like to thank Jake for his many contributions to the School of Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship, where he has been an excellent student, volunteer and work-study employee, assisting with the commissioning and maintenance of our machine shop and millwrighting facilities at our new campus.”
“Jake and Scott performed at the highest level in each of the five challenges they saw over the course of the day: these included Stainless Steel Tube Bending, Pneumatics, Centrifugal Pump Inspection, Laser Shaft Alignment and Turning on a Centre Lathe. In winning the Gold and Bronze medals respectively against 15 of the brightest and best apprentice and postsecondary Industrial Mechanic Millwrights, all the hard work and practice prior to the competition bore fruit and was a great credit to both of them,” adds Craig Brazil, faculty member in FAST and Technical Chair of the Industrial Mechanic Millwright competition for Skills Ontario.
Congratulations to all Sheridan participants and award winners and good luck in the next stage of the Skills Competitions.
