Sheridan hosts federal announcement of funding to advance gender equality, strengthen communities and improve access to careers
Sheridan hosted a historic funding announcement by Canada's Department of Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) to advance gender equality, support survivors, strengthen 2SLGBTQ1+ communities and expand participation in Canada’s economy and society.
The Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of WAGE and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), was joined by Brampton South Member of Parliament Sonia Sidhu to announce more than $77.5M of funding that will be distributed to 395 organizations throughout the country. The announcement was made Monday at Sheridan’s Magna Skilled Trades Centre at the Davis Campus in Brampton.
The Minister thanked Sheridan for its work providing women education in the skilled trades and other programs. “Because of Sheridan College, they are going to be set up for success,” Minister Valdez said during her announcement.
Sheridan President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Cindy Gouveia spoke about how access to college education unlocked her own potential, the importance of opening doors to all learners, and how expanded access and gender equality in workforce participation strengthens Canada's economy and communities.
“At Sheridan, that belief drives everything we do. We know talent is everywhere and it is our responsibility to open doors, ensuring every learner — regardless of background, identity, circumstance or gender — has access to the skills and training they need to build a future they are proud of,” said Dr. Gouveia. “Today is about progress, about momentum, opening more doors, creating more pathways, and making sure more people have the opportunity to contribute their talent and build their futures.”
Prior to the announcement, Minister Valdez, MP Sidhu and other federal dignitaries met with Sheridan students and toured the Magna Skilled Trades Centre, including the machine shop and die cutting machine.
