Grads to Watch 2026: Empowering others to make a difference
by Jill Scarrow – Jun 10, 2026
Child and Youth Care graduate DeJanai Love made her mark at Sheridan by getting involved in student life. As a Peer Mentor, she shared her advocacy for empowering underrepresented communities directly with students, including during the 2026 Leadership Conference, where she led a workshop on trauma-informed leadership.
What are you particularly proud of accomplishing during your time at Sheridan?
Some of the biggest highlights of my experience in the Child and Youth Care program have been the personal growth I’ve gone through, the meaningful relationships I’ve built with professors, and the lessons I’ve learned both inside and outside of the classroom. Throughout the program, I was challenged to step outside of my comfort zone, take risks, and reflect deeply on who I am—those experiences have helped shape me into the best version of myself.
What’s your advice for first-year students?
The best advice I would give to first-year students is to get involved. Join a club, attend events, and find something that brings you joy outside of the classroom. Becoming a peer mentor was a turning point for me. It gave me a sense of belonging and helped me stay motivated during a time when I was considering stepping away from school. It also allowed me to show up as my authentic self while supporting others in achieving their goals.
You’ve been incredibly involved at Sheridan! How have you balanced all that alongside your studies, plus your work as a fitness coach outside of school?
At first, balancing everything felt overwhelming, but over time I developed strategies that worked for me. I also learned the importance of prioritizing my mental health: setting boundaries, saying no when needed, and making time to rest and recharge.
What’s next for you?
Currently, I am developing a new youth program that will be offered within communities. This initiative focuses on creating supportive, trauma-informed spaces for young people to grow and thrive. I’m excited to keep learning, growing, and seeing where my journey takes me from here.
