Grading System

Students will be evaluated according to the specific learning outcomes described in the course outlines which include an evaluation plan. A grade will be issued for each course in which a student is registered and a report will be viewable via the myStudent Centre link in AccessSheridan after the end of each term to show the grades earned.

If you are looking for grading schemes for past years, please refer to the Historical Grade Schemes Web page.

Effective February 1, 2005, all Sheridan subjects, with the exception of subjects offered in Apprenticeship programs, are graded or designated as follows:

Note:
  1. Students enrolled in an Apprenticeship program will be graded according to the system established by the Apprenticeship Board. Students will be provided with an evaluation plan at the start of their program.

  2. Students who have outstanding work at the end of an academic term may be awarded the designation “I” (Incomplete). Students will be advised of the work that must be completed and the date by which it must be submitted to satisfy the subject requirements. The notation "I" will be changed to "F" if the assigned work is not completed by the designated date.

  3. If a student does not officially withdraw from a course but is unable to complete the work or write the final examination, for compelling reasons, he/she may be awarded Aegrotat Standing (AG). The student will have displayed satisfactory knowledge in the course work based on evaluation of achievement in the term. Aegrotat Standing may be awarded by the Dean of the School based upon the written recommendation of the Program Coordinator. AG is only awarded when an Incomplete (I) designation cannot be given.

  4. Supplemental privilege (SU) may be granted by the Promotion Committee to a student who has not met the minimum pass requirements in a subject. Supplemental privilege is attached to the preliminary assessment (D or F) and entitles the student to write an examination or complete other prescribed work. No grade higher than the minimum pass for graduation purposes may be earned through a supplemental assessment process. A fee may be charged to cover the costs of administering the assessment.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Grade Point Averages (GPAs) are weighted calculations based on the grade received and the credit value of the course (see chart below). There are three types of GPAs at Sheridan:

  • Program Term GPA*: Grade Point Average of all courses taken within a program for a given term.
  • Program Cumulative GPA*: Grade Point Average of all courses taken within a program for all terms.
  • Cumulative GPA**: Grade Point Average of all courses taken over the student’s entire academic history with Sheridan.

    * Program GPAs are included on students’ online grade report.
** Cumulative GPAs are included only on printed transcripts.

Transcripts

If a student is requesting a Sheridan transcript for the purpose of applying to another Ontario college or university, transcripts must be requested through the corresponding service centre – ontariocolleges.ca for college applications and OUAC for university applications. There is no charge for Sheridan students and graduates.

If transcripts are required for other purposes, students may request official transcripts of their complete academic record at Sheridan by submitting a request to the Office of the Registrar. Part of the administration charge, paid at the time of your first year admission to Sheridan, entitles you to your first three official transcript requests.

Course Outlines

At the beginning of each course, students have access to a course outline containing the following:

  • Course title and administrative details (code, credit value, instructor's name)
  • Course description and program context
  • Course learning outcomes
  • Prerequisites/corequisites
  • Evaluation strategies and grading
  • Text and other instructional materials
  • Topical outline.

For more information, please see the course outlines page.

COURSE AND PROGRAM CHANGES

Program Changes

Students may add, drop or withdraw from courses they are registered in by the deadlines indicated in the Academic Calendar.

Failure to comply with published deadlines may result in a grade of “F or NE”. These values are included in the GPA calculation with a value of zero.

Additional Courses

All full-time, postsecondary students may take courses in the day or evening in addition to their regular curriculum at Sheridan providing they meet course prerequisites and satisfy any corequisites concurrently.

  1. Students may take additional courses beyond their full course load, providing there is space available. Additional fees will apply.

  2. Under exceptional circumstances, students may be approved by their Associate Dean to substitute a course within the same term with a course of equal credit value, providing there is a space available and they do not exceed their full course load. The tuition fee will be waived. All other course fees will apply. Students must obtain approval for proposed course replacements or substitutions from the Associate Dean responsible for their program of study. In the case of General Education courses being replaced or substituted, approval by the Cross-College General Education Coordinator is required. Some Continuing Education courses may be exempt from this policy.

  3. Students may replace courses for which they have been granted Advanced Standing or Prior Learning Assessment with courses of equal credit value provided space is available. These substitutions must be made within the same term; credit values/courses cannot be transferred to subsequent terms. It is the student’s responsibility to request substitutions for courses where Advanced Standing or Prior Learning Assessment have been granted. Additional fees may apply.

Name/Address Changes

Students who change either their name or their mailing address must report that change to the Office of the Registrar. Students are encouraged to update address information directly on their online record via the myStudent Centre link within AccessSheridan. Name changes must be submitted in writing with the appropriate supporting documentation.
