Application -- how do I apply?

For information, please see "Applying to Sheridan"

Application -- what is the deadline date?

There is no deadline date. As soon as the program and start date appear on the OCAS database, you can apply. We will process applications, on a first come first served basis, as soon as we receive them.

Application -- are all eligible applicants accepted into the program?

No. While most of the applicants to the EDM program satisfy the eligibility requirements, we select applicants based on a combination of factors (see Application -- how does the selection process work? ). Given the limited number of places available, the number of excellent candidates, and our desire to select applicants who are most likely to be successful, we are unable to make offers to all the applicants who satisfy the eligibility requirements.

Application -- how does the selection process work?

When we receive your application from OCAS, we will send you a list of questions. When we receive your response to the questions, we may invite you to an interview. We will make a selection decision based on your post-secondary academic transcripts, your response to the questions, and the interview. If the class is not yet full, we will send you an offer. If we have already made enough offers to fill the class, we will put your name on a waiting list.

Class size -- how many students are in the class?

Each offering of the program consists of 1 class only, with a maximum of 24 students.

Curriculum -- how is it decided?

The program curriculum is changed on a regular basis, based on input from an external industry-based Program Advisory Committee, outside organizations, faculty, and students.

Curriculum -- is the curriculum fixed or can I develop an individual plan?

The curriculum is fixed.

Facilities -- what are they like?

The facilities are modern, and are updated regularly. The technological infrastructure is leading-edge. There are network connections throughout the campus, not just in the classroom. There are quiet areas for study, including the library. There are many services available, typical for a large community college, such as coffee shops, fast food outlets, a cafeteria, a bookstore, a printing shop, a health centre, an athletics centre, and a student centre.

Field Trips -- does the program include field trips?

No.

Grade Appeals -- is there an appeal process?

Yes -- please see Sheridan's Academic policies and procedures

Grades -- how are grades calculated?

Each course has an evaluation plan which specifies the number and relative weightings of evaluation components (e.g. assignments, projects, quizzes, tests). The evaluation plan is included in the course outline document. Each student in each course earns a grade, according to the college grading system. Currently, the pass mark for a course is 50%.

Graduation Credentials-- what do I receive?

Successful graduates receive a Sheridan "Enterprise Database Management" certificate and are well prepared to write their Oracle certification exams.

Guest Speakers-- does the program include guest speakers?

For certain course topics we do, on occasion, invite guest speakers.

Instruction -- what type of instruction is used?

The courses combine online training with instructor-led classroom sessions. However, the traditional lecture format is only one of the teaching techniques used. To encourage student involvement, and to help the students develop practical, hands-on expertise, many courses incorporate cooperative and collaborative learning approaches.

International Application -- I am an international student, how can I get more information?

Please see the Web site for Sheridan's International Student Services Office

Job Search -- is assistance provided?

The Career Centre Advisors help the students find full-time and part-time jobs. They also teach the students how to prepare resumes and cover letters, and they help the students brush up on their job search techniques and interviewing skills.
(see Career Center ).

Marks -- how are marks calculated?

Each course has an evaluation plan which specifies the number and relative weightings of evaluation components (e.g. assignments, projects, quizzes, tests). The evaluation plan is included in the course outline document. Each student in each course earns a grade, according to the college grading system. Currently, the pass mark for a course is 50%.

Oracle Certification -- are certification test fees included in the program fee?

No. However, as part of our partnership with Oracle, in the Workforce Development Program, we provide certification test discount vouchers (40% off).

Oracle Certification -- where can I get Oracle information?

See the Oracle Web site http://www.oracle.com/education/certification/

Oracle certification -- what does the program cover?

The EDM program offers the four courses that are required in order to qualify as a Database Administrator Oracle Certified Professional (OCP). These courses are: SQL, Database Fundamentals I, Database Fundamentals II, and Tuning.

Oracle certification -- how can I become an Oracle Certified Professional?

All Oracle certification examinations are held at an independent testing company (i.e. Sylvan Prometric -- see http://www.prometric.com ). Sylvan Prometric has many convenient testing centres (e.g. Brampton, Burlington, Etobicoke, Hamilton, Mississauga, Toronto). You are responsible for arranging your certification examination appointments. Each certification examination costs approximately $125 US. The EDM program fee includes discount vouchers worth 40% of the certification examination fee.

Payments -- what is the fee payment policy?

Fees can be paid in full for the whole program, or per term. The fee payment deadline is approximately 2 weeks before the start of the term. Alternatively, if you have applied for an OSAP loan, and the loan has not arrived, you can pay a "fee deferrment" fee by the fees deadline, and then pay the remaining fees amount as soon as the student loan arrives.

Program Age -- how long has this program been offered?

The first offering of this program was September 2003.

Refunds -- what is the refund policy?

If you withdraw by the tenth scheduled day of the first term, then all fees are refunded. If you withdraw by the tenth scheduled day of the second term, then all second term fees are refunded. In either case, an administrative processing charge is withheld.

Schedule -- are there scheduled break weeks?

Yes. Each term consists of 7 weeks of classes, 1 week off, and another 7 weeks of classes. Between the 2 terms, there is a break of 2 or 3 weeks. Also, no classes are held on statutory holidays.

Services -- what student services does Sheridan provide?

As a registered student at Sheridan, you can benefit from all the regular student services (e.g. athletics, bookstore, cafeteria, career centre, child care, counselling, financial assistance, health centre, library, peer mentoring, pub, student union). For more information, please see the Web site for Student Affairs.

Special Needs -- can Sheridan handle special requirements?

Yes. For more information, please see the Special Needs Web page(Disability Services ).

Tax receipts-- does the institution issue T2202A forms?

Yes, tax receipts are usually available at the end of February. Learn more

Timetable -- what are the scheduled hours?

The hours vary depending on timetabling constraints. Classes could start as early as 6PM, and could finish as late as 10PM during the week and on weekends classes may run from 8AM to 5PM. We make every effort to optimize the timetable, and attempt to schedule classes so that they will not be affected by statutory holidays.

Transportation -- how accessible is the campus?

Oakville Transit buses stop right at the main entrance of the campus. It is only a few minutes by bus to the Oakville GO station and the Oakville VIA rail station.

Workload -- how intense is the program?

During the 8 month academic portion of the program, there are 20 timetabled hours per week. You are expected to spend at least an additional 15 hours per week on homework (e.g. reading, assignments, projects).
