The purpose of General Education in the Ontario college system is to contribute to the development of citizens who are conscious of the diversity, complexity, and richness of the human experience; who are able to establish meaning through this consciousness; and, who, as a result, are able to contribute thoughtfully, creatively, and positively to the society in which they live and work.
General Education strengthens students’ generic skills, such as critical analysis, problem solving, and communication, in the context of an exploration of topics with broad-based personal and / or societal importance.
Sheridan offers a variety of General Education courses that focus on one of five themes:
Arts in Society
Civil Life
Social and Cultural Understanding
Personal Understanding
Science and Technology
Sheridan's framework for General Education courses:
Students graduating from an Ontario College Certificate program must have completed one general education courses which must be an elective and must be from a discipline outside the students’ principal field of study.
Students graduating from an Ontario College Diploma program must have completed three general education courses: one may be mandated; two must be elective and must be from disciplines outside the students’ principal field of study.
Students graduating from an Ontario College Advanced Diploma program must have completed four general education courses: one may be mandated and be from within the students’ principal field of study; two must be elective and must be from disciplines outside the students’ principal field of study; one is a free elective and may be from any field of study of interest to the student.
