Sheridan’s film and television program, Media Arts, emphasizes the practical skills you need for a career in the film and television industry. Working in state-of-the-art studios with high-end digital cameras and sound equipment, you’ll collaborate on short film and television projects, learning every aspect of the media arts production process. You’ll play a variety of roles on different production crews, getting direct experience in:
- Screenwriting
- Producing
- Directing
- Camera and lighting
- Editing
- Sound
- Digital special effects
Learn from the Pros
Media Arts courses at Sheridan are taught by professionals with years of film and television industry experience. You’ll work with 16mm film, standard and high-definition cameras, state-of-the-art editing and sound facilities, industry-standard software, and a digital TV studio and control room. You’ll also gain practical business skills such as pitching, fundraising and marketing.
A 12-week job placement during Year 3 provides further experience and professional contacts. You’ll graduate with a complete film and television skill set, a polished demo reel, and a very competitive résumé.
Opportunities for Further Study
After completing your Media Arts courses at Sheridan, you can continue your studies at York University in Toronto and work toward an Honours BFA degree.
You can earn a Bachelor of Communications degree with two semesters of study at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia.
Media Arts classes are held at Sheridan’s Trafalgar Road Campus, Oakville, Ontario.
Additional Costs
In addition to tuition, students can expect to spend $2,000 to $2,500 in the first academic year for the purchase of books, a laptop computer, a digital camera and an external hard drive (exact specifications will be made available to students approximately two months before the start of the fall semester). In the second and third academic years, students should expect to spend approximately $1,000 to $3,000 per year for production costs, depending on the project chosen.
Compared to their peers at other film and television colleges, Sheridan students enter the work force with more hands-on experience and greater mastery over media arts technologies and methods. Our alumni regularly find work for leading employers in:
- Film and TV production
- Post-production
- Camera and lighting
- Broadcasting
- Production coordinating
- Digital media
Recent Sheridan Media Arts grads have worked for companies such as CTV, MTV, CBC, Technicolor, Maple Leafs and Raptors TV, CityTV, Sound Dogs, Crush and Copperheart Entertainment.
