Sheridan English Language Studies (ESL) improves your ability to read, write, speak and listen in English. Exclusively for non-native speakers, the ESL Program offers five levels of instruction ranging from Foundations to Advanced levels and ultimately the English for Academic Purposes level.
The ESL Program encourages classroom interaction. You'll learn through:
- Collaborative projects with fellow classmates
- Computerized language lab speaking and listening practice
- Assignments that require interaction in the community
- Note taking in English
- Computer research
- Essay writing in English
At the program’s highest level, which prepares you to function in an English-speaking college or university environment, you'll take one general education course of your choice for credit in your postsecondary program along with an introductory computer communications course.
Professors in the English Language Studies Program are TESL Ontario certified and include educators holding PhDs and master’s degrees. They are knowledgeable in the most innovative and proven methods of teaching English as a second language.
Upon completion of the ESL Program, you'll receive a General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate and you may apply to other college programs at Sheridan without further language testing required.
Examples of Intermediate ESL program outcomes:
- Make or cancel an appointment
