MEDICAL CLEARANCE
Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Intensive students are required to complete a medical clearance process to be eligible for assignment of a field placement location. Clearance is granted by the Sheridan Health Offices located at the Trafalgar and Davis campuses. The Sheridan Health Record form can be downloaded from the Sheridan Home Page (Student Services/Health Services/Immunization forms).
- Students are required to show proof of the following records:
- TDP(tetanus, diphtheria, polio)
- MMR(measles, mumps, rubella)
- TB test (tuberculin skin tests)
- Hepatitis B vaccines (optional)
Required immunizations or blood tests can be completed at the Sheridan Health Offices during clinics that are scheduled in Field Orientation Semester One classes. Alternatively, students can see their own physician for these requirements. Costs for this process are the responsibility of the student. Students must be issued the certificate of clearance by the Sheridan Health Offices before a field placement will be assigned.
CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK
Legislation requires each organization that provides care and education to young children to have policies pertaining to the completion of criminal record checks. The organization (i. e. placement site) has the authority to record and review this information. In addition, each placement site has the right and responsibility to ensure that staff, volunteers and students meet that organization's policies. An acceptable record check varies from one placement to another.
Early Childhood Education students are required to have a criminal record check done as part of the Field Orientation course in Semester One and are required to comply with the placement site policy for second year placements. Early Childhood Intensive students are required to complete the process before beginning their placement in Semester One. Costs for the check are the responsibility of the student and vary according to the municipality of residence. Current costs range from $15.00 to $65.00 depending on the municipality.
Having a criminal record does not automatically preclude involvement in field placement. A record which casts doubt on the individual's ability to provide appropriate care for children will be considered grounds for termination or refusal of placement by most, if not all, field placement sites. However, some agencies will not accept students with any type of offence on their record. If, after several attempts a suitable field placement cannot be secured, it is suggested that the student speak with the Academic Advisor or the Associate Dean to seek guidance on alternative options as this may affect academic status.
The details of a student's criminal record will not be shared with potential field placement sites without the written consent of the student. Such consent will only be obtained if the student decides to share the results of the CRC with the field placement officer in the process of seeking assistance in obtaining a suitable field placement.
