Doran, Velma: ext 5390
Velma Doran has over 30 years of experience in a variety of early childhood settings including Montessori, Special Needs and HighScope Programs. Presently, she is the coordinator of the Early Childhood Education Program and the ECE Supervision and Administration Post Diploma Program at Sheridan College. Velma's teaching focus is to prepare students for their role in planning developmentally appropriate learning environments for young children. She is an advocate for quality care and learning for children and families as well as a promoter of the need for lifelong learning of educators. Her interest in International Education led to her involvements in a linkage partnership to develop and implement ECE training in Pakistan. Her educational credentials include a Bachelor of Arts Degree from York University, Ontario, a diploma in Early Childhood Education, Montessori Option, from Sheridan College and High/Scope Preschool Teacher Training. She also has her Certification from the Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario. Velma is a past president of the Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario and a member of the Canadian Child Care Federation. She is a recipient of Children's Services Awards in the Peel and Halton areas of Ontario and currently serves on the Board of Child Development Resource Connection Peel.

Ledger, Barbara: ext 2329
Barbara's 28 year career in the field of early childhood education has been varied and exciting. Initially she was a teacher of young children in both the community and college early childhood centres. She has extensive experience in the supervision of Early Childhood Centres and the administration of the Early Childhood Education and Community and Liberal Studies programs at Sheridan. Barbara is the co-researcher/author of the Preschool Computer Project Report which chronicles the development and implementation of computer technology in early childhood classrooms. In addition to teaching and administrative responsibilities, Barbara has provided leadership in curriculum development and assessment and is involved in the design and implementation of on-line post secondary curriculum. Barbara has been active in the early childhood community over the years. She has participated in many early childhood and elementary school committees both locally and provincially and has been a member of several boards of directors that have developed and managed non - for - profit child care centres in the community. These exciting challenges and experiences inform her teaching in the Early Childhood Education and Educational Assistant programs. Barbara has a background in developmental psychology from the University of Toronto, Early Childhood and Montessori Education from Sheridan College and Preschool Teacher Training from the High Scope Foundation. She is also a certified member of the Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario.

Van den Hurk, Wilma: ext 2253
Wilma van den Hurk (RN, BScN) transferred into the ECE program after teaching Nursing (Paediatrics) for twenty years. In the ECE program she focuses on Families, Observation of Children, and Caring for Infants and Toddlers. She is working to complete her High/Scope Lead Teacher Certificate in Infant and Toddler Curriculum. As a volunteer professional facilitator, with Bereaved Families of Ontario, she leads groups of young children who are mourning. She is a member in the College of Nurses, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, and Infant Mental Health Promotion Project (Sick Kids). She also volunteers with the children, women and elderly in her local Catholic parish.

Sutherland, Jamie: ext 2377
Dr. James R. Sutherland has been a professor of Early Childhood Education for more than thirty years. He holds a PhD in applied clinical psychology, early childhood focus, from the University of Toronto. His M.A. and PhD theses focused on early childhood teachers' expressions of affection to the children in their care. He has published pamphlets and a teacher-parent education book, Loving and Learning: Interacting with your child from birth to three. His professional clinical background includes therapeutic modalities such as play psychotherapy and systems-oriented family therapy, as well as developmental and psycho-educational assessments of infants and children. He has consulted to educational and clinical programs, and presented workshops to parents, elementary teachers, early childhood educators, public health nurses, and mental health professionals. Dr. Sutherland has specific interests in attachment theory, self concept/self esteem theories, early childhood teacher-child emotional relationships, affection in group child care, and related educational/clinical applications. He has expertise in bereavement and has led school age children's bereavement groups. He teaches courses in child and adolescent development, child assessment, child exceptionalities/disorders, Individual Program/Education Planning for children with special needs, child behaviour management, family life, human psychological growth and development, psychotherapeutic treatment techniques as well as child, parent and family bereavement.

Pereira, Carlos: ext 5385
Carlos Pereira has been involved in the E.C.E. field for the last sixteen years in a variety of roles. His work experience includes twelve years as an on the floor educator at the Algonquin College lab school in Ottawa were he had the pleasure of working with children and students of all ages. In his teaching experiences he has become more focused on teacher training over the last seven years and has included both part-time and full-time in-class teaching in the E.C.E. field. The most recent shift has included a move from Ottawa to Oakville to take on a professor's role here at Sheridan College. The areas of greatest interest for him are in child development, special needs and infant and toddler curriculum were his teaching has been centered. In terms of his professional qualifications he has a B.A. in developmental psychology, a diploma in E.C.E. and a Masters degree in Education. His perspective on education is that "we are all learners and we are all teachers and have never spent time in a classroom were I (he) wasn't amazed by what a three year old or a fifty year old can teach you about life and about yourself." He looks forward to being part of your learning and teaching as well.

Fewson, Moya: ext 5388
Moya has worked at Sheridan, full time for 16 years, part time for a few years before that. Moya has an ECE, a BA a B.ed and a MA...She is completing a second MA with a specialty in High/Scope and will be doing a Phd in Adult Education. Her passion is High/Scope: and has taught High/Scope related courses since beginning with the college. She trains extensively in Canada and has helped preschool programs, including the Sheridan Child Care centres, become accredited High/Scope Centres. She is an endorsed trainer in both the preschool and infant toddler methods. She has served on several boards, including the CDRCP. Moya was the recipient of the Peel Children's Services Award, as well as the Provincial Children's Services award. In addition to this honoured recognition she was also partnered in a workshop with David Weikart at the International Conference in Greece. She has have written for the High/Scope paper Resources and is working on a book on empowering teachers. She is the founder and executive director of the Caledon East Children's Place, a not for profit centre that works with about 90 children. She has a husband, two children (both teachers) a lovely daughter in law (also a teacher) and will become a first time grandmother in the Spring. She also have a black cat named Lilith.

Corbet, Leslie: ext 2382
Leslie received her Honours B. H. Ec. as well as a teaching certificate from the University of Manitoba. Leslie has extensive experience working with children having taught kindergarten as well as working with children with special needs. Leslie joined Sheridan as the first supervisor of the Day Care Centre. She has taught part time and full time in the Early Childhood Education program for many years. In addition, Leslie has served as the coordinator of the Canadian Nanny and E.C.E. program and more recently as a Faculty Advisor for the Early Childhood Assistant Progam.

Commeford, Angie: ext 5386
Angie Commeford (E.C.E., B.A.) has been with Sheridan College since 1975. During this time, she has had the unique experience of working with a variety of learners of different ages, at different points in their education. In her role as the supervisor of the Davis campus Early Childhood Lab school, she worked with young children, their parents, ECE students ands with members of community agencies. As a faculty member in the School of Community and Social Services, she teaches courses dealing with professional skills, family life, prosocial behaviour and the health and safety of young children. She has completed the High/Scope Preschool Curriculum course and is looking forward to taking further instruction in the area of High/Scope training. She coordinated the one year Early Childhood Assistant programme for many years until its completion in April, 2004. For several years, her involvement in the Continuing and Part-time studies programme, as a coordinator of E.C.E., put her in touch with many adult learners and provided her with the opportunity to mentor part time faculty members.

Baas-Anderson, Anna: ext 2354
Prior to her full-time faculty position at Sheridan College, Anna Baas-Anderson (E.C.E. B.A. M.Ed.) has been actively involved in the ECE field for over 20 years. Her experience ranges from working directly with children in Hull, Quebec to a faculty position for First Nations students at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology in the ECE program. Anna's experience also includes supervisory and consulting positions in the early childhood field. She presently holds a title of "Professional Consultant" for her volunteer work with Bereaved Families of Ontario, specializing in children's grief. She is a graduate from the ECE program at Algonquin College, she completed B.A.A in ECE from Ryerson University and recently completed her M.Ed. in Human Development and Applied Psychology from OISE. Anna continues to advocate for teaching through technology as a method of life long learning, to promote research and to complete her credential towards the Preschool Teacher Training from the High/Scope Foundation.

Coulthard, Cathy: ext 2674
Before joining Sheridan in 2003, Cathy worked extensively in adult education as well as with children, families and Early Childhood Educators in a variety of programs and services across the Golden Horseshoe. With an B.A. in Child Studies and a M.A. in Adult Education, Cathy has been an active participant in life-long learning that has enabled her to attend and present workshops in a variety of international opportunities, and has involved her in advocacy for children, families and early childhood educators. Cathy is actively involved with the Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario and is a member of the Canadian Child Care Federation and the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care.

Bailey, Kathy: ext 2660
Kathy Bailey has a wide variety of experience working with both children and students. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo and her ECE diploma at Conestoga College. She has a diploma from the University of Guelph in Supervision and Administration for Child Care and is a certified Early Childhood Educator by the Association of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario. Kathy has worked in private, community and municipal childcare programs. At the Sheridan Trafalgar Child Care Centre she has worked with all age groups and also has several years experience as the program supervisor. Her current position at Sheridan is as Field Placement Officer for the ECE/ECE Intensive programs where she is responsible for setting up placements for all students on both the Trafalgar and Davis campuses and working with our partner agencies in the community.

As a graduate of Sheridan's Early Childhood Education program, Cynthia Abel is delighted to return to Sheridan as a part-time faculty member. Cynthia achieved a graduate degree from Eastern University, New Mexico and attended the inaugural Canadian Scholar's Teacher Education program at Daemen College in Amherst, New York. She brings a wealth of varied experience in the early childhood field. Cynthia's interests include environmental education; she has recently been involved in the Environmental Educators of Ontario (EEON) Greening the Way Ontario Learns campaign.

Since graduation she has enjoyed a very rewarding career in the field of early childhood. Alison has an undergraduate degree in Science with a major in Kinesiology and a minor in Educational Psychology, as well as diplomas in Early Childhood Education (equivalency) and Resource Teacher (DCMR). She has worked in Halton for 25 years as a kinesiologist, resource teacher and director of a child care centre for 150 children. In 2001 she retired from full time work and now works part time as an early childhood consultant and instructor at Sheridan College. Alison looks forward to meeting you and inspiring you towards excellence in the early childhood care & education field and hopes that her passion becomes your passion for young children and their families.

Diane (E.C.E.C.) received her diploma from Ryerson prior to coming to Sheridan in 1971 as the supervisor of the Trafalgar campus afternoon preschool program. She then taught in the capacity of a faculty, at the college for 2 years until resigning her full time position to raise her family. Diane continues to teach part time in both the day and evening programs. For several years during her time at the college, Diane was the continuing education co-ordinator for the E.C.E. program in both Halton and Peel regions. Currently Diane is a part-time daytime faculty member who still likes to keep her link with continuing education students. Diane also owns and continues to work in a licensed preschool in her home that opened in 1979.

Robillard, Judy: ext 2757
Judy completed her B.A. in Early Childhood Education from Ryerson University. She taught in their child care centres while completing her Masters of Education from the University of Toronto. Judy has also worked as a Child Life Specialist and as a parent educator. She has been teaching at Sheridan for the past 15 years in both the fulltime and part-time studies program. Judy is also the co-ordinator of the ECE program for continuing and part-time studies. In 2002 she completed her High Scope Lead Teacher Training. She is also an active member of the Association of Early Childhood Educators,Ontario.

Linda is the Manager of Sheridan's Early Childhood Centres where she provides leadership in the administration and operation of these 3 demonstration, laboratory centres. Linda hold a B.A. in psychology (specializing in dance therapy) as well as a Sheridan E.C.E. Diploma. During her 25 year career in the Early Childhood field she has worked in a variety of front-line and administrative positions including childcare centre and nursery school teacher, centre supervisor and ECE part-time faculty, as well as having extensive involvement with many professional and community agencies.
