A team of Sheridan Marketing students, competing against fourteen other colleges at the recent Ontario Colleges (OCMC) Marketing Competition held in Niagara Falls, brought home a total of two Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medal from this hotly contested annual event.
Winners included Kevin Viana, an Oakville resident in his final term of the Marketing Co-op Program at Sheridan, who won a Gold Medal in Sales Presentation and Silver in Quiz Bowl. This is the third time Kevin has been part of the Sheridan team at OCMC, and he likens it to a major sporting event. "It's an adrenalin rush from the moment you get there." Marketing students have to go through try-outs to make the team, and those selected spend 10 weeks preparing for the two-day competition. Keith Barnwell, Kevin's faculty coach, viewed the action in close-up. "Kevin put his heart and soul into this competition and I couldn't be more proud of him."
For Kevin, this year's victories were a satisfying way to cap off his Sheridan experience (he graduates in December). Kevin arrived at Sheridan via a circuitous route. His career goal from childhood involved astrophysics, but after two years of study at the University of Toronto, he decided that reality was not living up to the dream. After a year-long stint in the retail sector he enrolled at Sheridan.
Kevin's performance at the OCMC caught the attention of some of the industry judges, resulting in a job offer which he plans to pursue after graduation. Kevin attributes his success in the program and at the OCMC to his Sheridan professors. "The strength of the program is its faculty – their insight, and their drive and motivation to help you succeed. You'll learn more from them than from any textbook."
Each year, fifteen colleges send students to compete in a total of 11 events at the OCMC. Since 2000,Sheridan has placed in the top three colleges a total of six times. Other Sheridan winners at this year's OCMC included the team of Mike Alves and Rachel Bosley who won Gold in Marketing Research; Joline Christiani and Amanda Patchett who earned Silver in International Marketing; and the team of Vanessa Lawson and Adam Ball, who received Bronze in Integrated Marketing Communications.
