Turning an Obsession into a Career

Bachelor of Applied Arts (Photography)

Graduation Year: 2003

I was born in Ottawa in 1979. In 1983, my family and I moved to Melbourne, Australia. It was at the age of 15 when I received my first 35mm camera and fell in love with the art of photography.

Moving back to Canada in 1998, I began to study at Vanier College in Montreal. Enrolling in a classic black-and-white photography course, I found endless inspiration in this new environment. With the will and urge to travel, I moved to Halifax and lived there for two years, finding part-time work and studying freelance photography at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

I had realized this was becoming more than an obsessive hobby and I quickly decided to mould my talents into a career and became a student at Sheridan in 2001. The Applied Photography course turned out to be far more demanding than I had anticipated.

Adding the commitments of being part of the men’s varsity basketball team wasn’t easy to say the least, although the college did have help for students like me. Without the assistance of a gentleman named Rob Till, Head of Student Affairs, I would not have passed my second semester and therefore delayed my graduation an entire year.

Soon after graduation I moved back to Australia and photographed the eastern shore line. After spending 10 months down under I moved back to Ontario and set up my existing company. Coincidently the first paying job that I received was to shoot the cover of the Sheridan alumni Traditions magazine.

My time at Sheridan was unforgettable. Being a student may seem like you’re there forever, but when you graduate and move on with your career, you’ll realize it was a very short time indeed.
