Sheridan Work Study Assistance Program

OVERVIEW

The Financial Aid & Awards Office administers the Ontario Work Study Program and the Sheridan Work Study Programs. The programs subsidize students’ on-campus paid employment while they are registered as full-time Sheridan students. Students first complete and submit an application form, secure an on campus job and if approved begin their employment. Work Study employers include the STARS Recruiting Office, Athletics, Student Services, and more. Employment opportunities are listed at jobs.sheridan. Students are approved for the Work Study Program for one term only and must re-apply if they would like to continue for a second term.

Funding for all work study programs is limited each term and may be exhausted prior to the application deadline. Applications are accepted starting on the first day of each term and are reviewed in the date order they are received.

Students in collaborative/joint degree programs may be considered under the Ontario Work Study Program if they are in receipt of OSAP. International students are not eligible for work study.

Sheridan offers three streams of work study, each with its own eligibility criteria.

1. Ontario Work Study Program (OWSP)
This is a part-time employment program for OSAP students. Students can earn up to $1000 per term in employment income through this program. The eligibility criteria include:

  • Full-time student at Sheridan (60% of full course load or 40% of full course load for students with permanent disabilities)
  • Receive OSAP for the term of application
  • Maintain good academic standing (2.4 GPA Degree Programs or 2.0 GPA Diploma & Certificate Programs)
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a protected person
  • Ontario resident as defined by OSAP

Note: For OSAP students all income earned during a school term must be reported to the Financial Aid Office and may impact a student’s OSAP funding.

2. Sheridan Work Study Program (SWSP)
This is a part-time employment program for students who are not receiving OSAP and/or are from another province. Students can earn up to $1000 per term in employment income through this program. The eligibility criteria include:

  • Demonstrate financial need. If you are receiving funding from another province you must provide the notice of assessment from that province

  • Maintain good academic standing (2.4 GPA Degree Programs or 2.0 GPA Diploma & Certificate Programs)

3. Sheridan Between Academic Terms (BAT) Program
This is a full-time employment program for students who are not currently in an academic term. They may be on a co-op term or break between terms. Students can earn up to $5765.63 in employment income in one semester of the BAT Program (based on 37.5 hours/week at $10.25/hr for 15 weeks). The eligibility criteria include:

  • Full-time student at Sheridan (60% of full course load or 40% of full course load for students with permanent disabilities) in the term prior to applying for the BAT Program

Complete the work study application and submit to the Awards Office once the semester has begun and prior to the deadline date. Check the jobs.sheridan website to view job postings and apply for employment. Students will be notified whether they have been approved or denied for the work study program via their Sheridan email account. Students will only be approved for one work study position per term and may not work for multiple employers under the work study programs.

APPLICATION PACKAGE & FURTHER INFORMATION

The work study application package consists of two parts, the work study application and the necessary forms for human resources. Please complete and submit the work study application to the Financial Aid and Awards Office starting January 9th. The deadline to apply for the winter term is Friday, February 24th, 2012. The HR forms need to be submitted to your employer/HR. If a student was work study approved for the fall term, they do not need to complete the HR forms again unless they require a change. They just need to submit the work study application for the winter term. All new work study applicants must complete both sets of paperwork.

INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYERS

The Financial Aid & Awards Office administers the Ontario Work Study Program and the Sheridan Work Study Programs. The programs subsidize students’ on-campus paid employment while they are registered as full-time Sheridan students.

The employer pays 100% of an approved work study student’s wages during the term and then submits a payroll verification report once the term is complete. A cost transfer is then initiated to reimburse the employer for 75% of the student’s wages. Part-time work study students may earn a maximum of $1000 under the work study program and full-time co-op or between academic term work study students may earn a maximum of $5765.63. If employers pay the student above these maximums they are responsible for the additional wages from their department budget.

The work study student eligibility criteria and application package are available above.

The package contains: 2 page work study application

TD1 Tax Form Federal
TD1ON Tax Form Provincial

Due to the academic and financial need requirements of the work study program students must apply for work study each term and demonstrate their continued eligibility for the program. A student will be work study approved for only one employer per term.

Students (or employers) submit only the 2 page work study application to the Awards Office. The remaining forms are to be sent to Human Resources directly.

Work study jobs should be posted through the Sheridan Career Centre. Email the posting to postajob@sheridaninstitute.ca.

The Awards Office will notify both the student and employer by email whether the student has been approved or denied for the work study program.
