Self Advocacy

Ellen B. Ryan and Kathleen Banchoff

Advocating for yourself is an important part of taking responsibility for your own health and often that of your family and community.

Good communication leads to positive social relationships, which in turn are associated with many health benefits. These include: help when needed (e.g., a ride to the doctor), better immune function, reduced effects of negative mood, encouragement for help-related behaviors, and a better sense of self-efficacy.
