Sheridan and ABB Canada announce partnership to enrich robotics education, support manufacturers
Sheridan and ABB Canada yesterday announced a partnership that has led to the creation of a new Robotics Centre in the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies (CAMDT), located at Sheridan’s Davis Campus in Brampton. The new ABB Robotics Centre will allow both students and industry partners to gain training in applications that include robotic welding, picking, packing and palletizing, machine tending, material handling and product assembly, and advanced vision-related programming.
The ABB Robotics Centre features over 12 robots and related work cells, software and controllers. “Our partnership with ABB will extend far beyond supplying this new equipment to outfit the Centre,” said Dr. Farzad Rayegani, Associate Dean of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Sheridan. “ABB will be involved in educating our students and staff in its use, building a strong foundation for co-op opportunities and future full-time employment.”
ABB will also team up with Sheridan in applied research initiatives through the Centre, providing consulting and training to third-party industry partners who wish to engage with CAMDT on robotics projects using the highly specialized equipment. “The goal is to create an ecosystem where multidisciplinary teams can come together to solve advanced technical challenges that enrich the community as a whole,” said Rayegani.

”This is the best of both college and industry: creating together an optimized experience for students and industry professionals is the value-added of a partnership between ABB and Sheridan,” said Chris Poynter, Vice President and General Manager, Discrete Automation and Motion Division, ABB Canada.
“The new ABB Robotics Centre, together with our existing Product Innovation Centre, is a great example of our communities of expertise at work,” said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, Sheridan’s President and CEO. “We are grateful that our partnerships are allowing us to bring together the ideas, experience and infrastructure needed to become a true technology hub and resource for the manufacturing sector in Peel and Halton regions.
