On June 10, 2009, Zonta Club of Oakville members will attend Sheridan’s School of Community & Liberal Studies academic awards ceremony to present Sheridan with a cheque for $36,000.  The presentation will take place in Theatre Sheridan at 7:00 p.m.
The money was raised at "Rhapsody in Yellow", a fundraising event held last November to support bursaries at Sheridan and to raise awareness for women suffering from abuse in Halton.

The service club aims to help women trying to escape domestic violence. Many of these women have no current, marketable skills that are essential to finding a job. Without a means to support themselves and their children, victims of domestic abuse often return to their abusive environments.

"Our goal was to fund bursaries for full-time study programs at Sheridan College for women who have lived in abusive environments and wish to break the cycle by learning career skills to become self-sufficient, self assured women", said Cherie Duvall, past president of Zonta.

Access to educational opportunities at Sheridan will make a great difference in the lives of these women.

"Women who have suffered from abuse deserve the chance to receive a post-secondary education within their community", said Dr. Robert Turner, president and CEO of the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. "With over 100 programs to choose from, these women will have the opportunity to find a career of choice that will be the turning point in their lives."

Sheridan is grateful for the support of the Zonta Club of Oakville and everyone who attended Rhapsody in Yellow. Sheridan is now accepting applications for the Zonta Club of Oakville bursaries.  Visit http://awards.sheridaninstitute.ca for more information.
